The Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize (the only one other than the Literature Prize that actually gets any real press) has been announced, and it's been awarded to Shirin Ebadi. By all indications, it was a damned good choice. (Although I get a kick out of Lech Walesa whining at the end of the article that the Pope didn't get the award, the day after the news broke that the Catholic Church has been telling folks in the third world countries not to use condoms because the condoms wouldn't protect them from AIDS. That doesn't get you the Peace Prize. That gets you a bronzed mitre shoved up your ass.)

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] shadesong: The prize for Medicine this year went to the folks who developed the MRI. :-)

You are about the fifth person to tell me that. :)

I posted a pope screed over in my LJ. Hit some of the reason the pope doesn't deservve the award.

I was impressed with who they did choose.

I wonder if the Iranian govt will block the money from arriving?

No, it was announced, they just took their time with it.

No real praise of course.

I'm extremely glad that the Pope didn't get it. I'd been reading the speculation and cringing. While I actually really admire some of the things that he's done, he's also so conservative and reactionary in most aspects that it would have been a joke.

That's ok.. I'm sure God has a much more prestigious award for the pope in Heaven... Why, as the voice of God on Earth, I'm sure he could award it to himself now, before it's too late for everyone here to know what a great guy he is...

Thing is, condoms aren't a good protection against AIDS. They're better than nothing, but they're insufficient for the level of protection that is really needed.

Simple math reveals that.

Of course, the position of the church that no sex at all is the best prevention is right, but terribly impractical, so I am for using condoms to slow things down, but the church is technically right.

You'd appreciate this then. My Dad's friend won the Nobel Prize in
Chemistry. For X-ray crystallography of the protein channels that Dad's been studying his entire adult life. Dad's been talking about how Rod was going to win it since the article first hit Nature, ~5 years ago. And Rod's only like 47 years old. Dad was thrilled! And it was announced on Dad's birthday, too.

Of course, there's some controversy over the MRI deal. The inventor and patent owner of it seems to feel slighted for not getting the award, since he's gotten almost every other scientific award over it.

Heard it on good ol' NPR.
