Can we sink any lower? Is there anyone -- anyone -- out there with such a poorly developed sense of humanity (forget ethics of morality) who thinks that the soldiers described shouldn't have their dicks (or clits -- we've certainly proven that evil knows no gender boundaries) chopped off and fed to them with rancid mayonnaise?

Meanwhile, at the "top," the press is doing a wonderful job of burying most stories about Riggs and their links to the Saudis, including providing money-laundering operations that might well have financed terrorist groups.

But what's really buried is the fact that the CEO of Riggs is some guy named Jonathan Bush, whose brother is a former president, and whose nephew is the worst and most vile president in US history.

Hey, if a presidential brother (or daughter) drinks too much, that's a story. But commits ethical lapses bordering on treason (and unquestionably criminal)? Hey, that's not news.

(then again, Dubya and his brothers are all pretty much cut from the same cloth as Uncle Johnny, they just didn't associate with terrorists when they committed most of their financial crimes).

Not that any of this matters in John Ashcroft's Amerika, where speech is free when you act all happy-like, and costly when you don't.

Next time I go to Kroger, I may have to keep an eye out for Constitution Brand Toilet Paper. It's pretty fucking obvious that Shrubya doesn't have any other plans for it.

Yes, haven't you heard that the soldier who blew the whistle on Abu (I forget the name) is not exactly receiving the hero's welcome he deserves, in his own home town?

thankfully, there's also good news.

Here (http://chrenkoff.blogspot.com/2004_05_16_chrenkoff_archive.html#108493214609755777) is a bunch of reading material. Yeah, there's some conservative slant, but the fact of the matter is that the media is doing a great job of presenting its bias out there. We can't wait to get the next article on prison abuse, whereas the Nick Berg story lasted five seconds.

There's some nasty stuff to work through in this time, but the fact of the matter is that Iraq deserves peace, as well as the elections they've been starving for. I just want to see a good outcome for people.

I'm not saying we should ignore prisoner abuse in the least; we're a country who should be upholding the principles of compassion and justice we espouse. But it feels like our own media is undermining any possibility of good being done. Our morale, as a country, sucks right now. I'm not enthusiastic about Bush's principles at all; nevertheless, I wonder how we're supposed to stand tall as a country and believe that we can do good in this world if we're fed these stories over and over.

And how many people will turn around and say something to the effect of, "It's just emotional release," (http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_050404/content/rush_is_right_2.guest.html) or "It's no different from a fraternity stunt? Cause I heard that plenty about the prisoners already.

Some people just don't get it.
And another thing...As a member of a fraternity we didn't do that, a college can shut the offending fraternity down and prosecute, our national organization condems it and will not defend their offending brothers.
Why? The bottom line is no human being should these things to another living thing.

You know, the first two articles you linked to disgusted me and made me angry, but the third one. I am fucking enraged. This is insane!

"The girl's mother, also a teacher, was ordered by the principal to destroy the child's poetry. The mother refused and may lose her job."

Number one, if my mother even thought about it, I would spend the rest of my life hating her. Number two, how dare they demand such a ludicrous request? The only authority they should have is keeping her from reading them at school functions, and even that is sketchy. But, beyond that, there should be no authority that would allow a school to order a student's poetry to be destroyed, nor should they be allowed to fire a student's mother for not following through with such an order.

The fact that they have so many teachers either not being rehired or who are openly being fired makes me think that perhaps the issue here is not the teachers, but the administrator himself. He obviously lacks the intelligence to realize that what he is doing subverts the Constitution of the very country he claims to love and stand for.

"Critical thinking, questioning of public policies and freedom of speech are not to be allowed to anyone who does not share the thinking of the school principal."

And how long before it is not hte school principal, but the local government, etc. etc. etc.

"Are book burnings next?"

Likely. And who knows, maybe they'll bring the Inquisition to the US so we can have burnings at the stake as well.

FYI, the poem can be found here. (http://www.greenleft.org.au/back/2003/531/531p22.htm)

Wow! Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] iresprite, for the link. That poem was damn powerful.

In other words, by making a big deal out of it, the idiot made sure practically everyone on Earth has a chance to see it.

I love media.

As I said to a friend over email:

It's really funny. The behavior on the part of the military and the principal are so over the top it seems almost like a joke. I mean, the "shut your face" bit is so immature it makes the principle sound like an anatagonist in a kid's book. Actually, it sort of invokes the ghost of Umbridge from the most recent Potter book. It's so ludicrous you have to wonder what the heck is going on in that administration.

Actually it sounds exactly like that principal's been taking his debate pointers from Bill O'Reilly.

I actually had a principal like that my senior year of highschool. He was so over the top it was frightening...

You know, I can't even remeber what exactly was going on that caused the uproar then, and it actually got so bad that one of the school board meetings had to be moved out of the Admin building and into the HS auditorium to cope with the 500 people that wanted to be at it. hmmmm....haveta see if my parents remeber.

[identity profile] xforge.livejournal.com 2004-05-20 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Did I hear NPR correctly this morning, the two people who've thus far been prosecuted for this are one bottom-ranking "specialist" and one guy who blew the whistle in the first place?

[identity profile] copycatjsh.livejournal.com 2004-05-20 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
uh, about Riggs...

http://www.riggsbank.com/Discover_Riggs/ doesn't say that anyone named Jonathan Bush is CEO or anything.

From the link:
Management

* Robert L. Allbritton is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Riggs National Corporation.
* Timothy C. Coughlin is President of Riggs National Corporation.
* Lawrence I. Hebert is President and Chief Executive Officer of Riggs Bank N.A.

IOW, can you provide info on that?

doesn't seem like that branch had a whole lot to do with the others.

if so, then it really doesn't matter who the CEO is.

*shrugs*

In other words, he likely had little to nothing to do with it, and his name and family connections are meaningless to the central issue of the Riggs parent company or the Bank itself.

It's not a point being buried. It's just not a point.

oh yeah, and on the other things:

First link, I hope they tie them up by their genitals and hang them.

Third link, you know the courts will settle that one out... that's blatant. Especially the courts in New Mexico (democratic gov, democratic congress IIRC, etc).

and the Bush administration's failure to give substance to its "No child left behind" education policy.

which I bet you $$$$ is the hottest topic in the faculty lounge. It certainly is in Oklahoma.

The principal is obviously an idiot -- if anyone wants to go to court over this -- and if the teacher is union -- he hasn't a leg to stand on. Destroy the poem?? Thats just ridiculous -- the poem exists in her head, so destroying the hardcopy is useless. He sounds obsessive-compulsive to me.

I wonder if his faculty is allowed to vote for Kerry.

I don't want to sound like an anti-american French asshole, but isn't your country turning more and more fascist every day ?

I've read many articles describing how sometimes democracy was but a word on your side of the pond, but man, articles like the third one still manage to frighten me.

Hopefully Dubya will get his ass kicked in November...
Unfortunately, there are so many morons in your country willing to vote for him because they're basically stupid and uneducated that it's by no means a sure thing.

There is one state I heard on CNN recently (no memory of which) that is considering suit against the Feds for failing to fund the No Child Left Behind act... They are arguing that the Federal government has no right to order that act, as it isn't in the powers given to the feds by the Constitution.

I am eager to see this develop - give 'em hell [unnamed state]!

When you've finished wiping the spittle from the screen after typing this, maybe you could consider the irony inherent in your attempt to dehumanise your "enemy".

And you can also look up the several comments made extensively elsewhere (eg branwynelf's journal) concerning the poem story.

And finally, FFS, take a chill pill.
