The opening montage of Boondock Saints, as I'd have written it:

Rosengurtie: Rule of thumb? Wait, rule of thumb? In the early 1900s it was legal for men to beat their wives, so long as they used a stick no wider than their thumb.

Connor: No, that's a fucking linguistic urban legend, you daft cow! What, do you also think that the Eskimos have sixty-five words for snow?

(And yeah, I loved the movie, but the Cliff Clavens of the world annoy me in any context)

Why do people love that movie so much? I was terribly bored by it.

We just watched Boondock Saints a few nights ago. What a hoot! It gets my vote for Best use of Willem Dafoe in a film that does not involve VietNam.

Thank you for this.
I thought "rule of thumb" was a brewing term?

Well, yeah, but in terms of origins... But who can ever know. I know it's still illegal to drive your automobile in downtown Kansas City because it'll scare the horses. What horses, we don't know.
