I still don't like him in the role. He's too swarthy and sinister-looking.

He looks more a thug in a Guy Ritchie film than a James Bond.

Except that, well, Bond is supposed to look fairly mean.

He fits Fleming's idea of Bond very well.

He fits Fleming's idea of Bond very well.

My understanding of Fleming's concept is that he imagined Bond as an essentially dull and uninteresting man to whom extraordinary things happened. That's how he chose the name "James Bond;" James Bond was the author of a reference book about birds, and Fleming thought it was the most boring name imaginable.

Where did you hear Fleming envisioned Bond as mean-looking?

From reading Casino Royale.

Read the descriptions of Bond there.

Really? You never had any doubt? Even while they were refitting the Aston Martin with an automatic shift because he can't drive a stick? Or when reports came in that he gets queasy in speedboats?

I don't know... he looks so deadly serious in that promo... far more Dalton than Brosnan or Connory. Bond needs to have a mischevious twinkle and subtle smirk to go with the ability to kick ass.

Dalton was probably got to play one of the better Bonds. I mean he was essentially a spy who killed people in service to his government. I mean thats what Bond is supposed to be. An elite assassin and trouble-shooter for the British government...

Yes, but what makes him so entertaining is the charm, sophistication and panache with which he carries out his assignments.
