Morning web surfing led me to Claire Light's Atlas(T) blog, a delightfully written journal focusing on mapping and related issues. In turn, that led me to this post, which quoted and led me to the book From Squaw Tit to Whorehouse Meadow: How Maps Name, Claim, and Inflame.

And that, in a nutshell, is why my Amazon wishlist never drops much below 400 items.

I just finished reading that. I keep my Amazon wishlist lower by having my library request list start looking like a Netflix queue....

I was amused to see that the book's mention of the "Sea of Japan"/"East Sea" issue was followed this very week by a letter to the Boston Globe from the South Korean consulate...complaining about the use of "Sea of Japan".
