Fuck.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

He was one of the greats. For every mediocrity (Dr. T and the Women, Popeye), there were three films like MASH, Nashville, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, The Player, etc.

I had no idea he was even ailing.

ah fuck.
altman was fucking brilliant and one of the few truly great american directors of the past few decades.
9and i think 'popeye' was sheer brilliance up untilt he point where the studio stopped paying for it, and you can almost see the moment in the film that happens.)

Know some folk who met him when he filmed Cookie's Fortune in Holly Springs, Mississippi...spoke quite highly of him...nice movie too...was nice to see a movie filmed in and set in Mississippi where racial tension wasnt the primary plot...

Wow. This is the first I heard of it. I had no idea he was sick, either, or that he was 81 (!). Sad news. At least he was making movies up until the end, though.

This is awful. One of my favorite directors. I really enjoyed A Prarie Home Companion and I can only listen to the radio show for about ten minutes at a time before I want to throw the radio at the wall.

Secret Honor is one of the best American films ever made.

Oh well shit.

He was a good friend of a friend of mine... and so I always kept up on what he did.
That said? his health has been iffy for nearly a decade plus that I can recall... our mutual friend Frank had commiserated with him over surviving near-death stuff only to find it still hard to convince people you were healthy.

Still, what a loss.

:(

RIP

I think Popeye was far from mediocre.. As far as flops go it was spectacular!
