Quick afternoon football notes
Dec. 3rd, 2006 05:16 pm1. J-E-T-S! I was more than a little worried going into this game; it was nice to see the Jets just destroy the Pack from top to bottom. And go Blair Bryan Thomas.
2. I think the Pats are overrated, but I sure wouldn't have expected them to come that close to losing to the Lions (who are, admittedly, better than their record).
3. The Falcons actually won! Now imagine how good they'd do if they had a quarterback instead of a running back with an okay arm. That said, any time the Redskins lose, I'm happy.

And his wide receivers really, really suck.
And he's a running back before he's a wideout. A tiny running back, but a back nonetheless. He makes cuts, that's a strong RB skill.

And that's been the case with better receivers in the past (I always assumed that management had just given up on the recent years.
jets
Date: 2006-12-04 01:53 am (UTC)Well it is sure nice to see the jets having a 7-5 record in a complete rebuilding year.
The new jets management is doing a real good job COACHING. This is with a running game that was really hurting at the start of a year, and with a qb off two major shoulder surgeries, and a defensive that was struggling to learn the 3-4.
The amazing thing is--the Jets are GOING to finish with a better record than the Giants. And its not just talent. Its coaching. Mangini is tough but seems to communicate. Tom Coughlin is a bully, has little feel for a game and even less capacity to relate to his players.
It just goes to show you, when you hire a head coach--you go for the young talented guy. Terry Bradway wanted to hire former Vikings Coach (and waste of space) Mike Tice. If you know anything about sports, a coach with some success in the league often DOESNT repeat it--Bill Belicheck is the exception. So is Bill Parcells. More likely, they are fired for a good reason and won't be as good again. Even Jimmy Johnson was rather mortal in Miami.
Coach of the Chargers (shotenhimer) has been a good coach for a long time, but often chokes badly in the playoffs. Not something you want to be known for.
Jets had a great draft this year, some old picks are playing into good players finally (thank you Bryan Thomas, a bust under Herm) and with another good draft (ray rice? Adrian Peterson?) they could make a huge leap forward next year.
Why do people think Herm is a good coach? He doesnt really do much innovative on either side of the ball, and is a great motivator--thats it. He still can't manage a clock. Mangini is the real deal and will be in ny for a long time.
