Arnold Drake

Nearly lost amidst the hullabaloo over the temporary and silly death of a fictional super-hero is the real death of yet another one of the great comic writers, Arnold Drake. I can't think of anything to add to Mark Evanier's obituary, other than to note that many of his creations -- The Doom Patrol, Stanley and His Monster, and Deadman, for three -- are amongst my favorites.

It is kind of sad that I am a fan of all three of those properties, but haven't read any of his original work on them (Grant Morrison, Phil Foglio's admittedly limber reinterpretation, and whenever DM happens to show up in various occult books); in the case of the original DP, I blame the $50 cover price on the otherwise incredibly sexy archives collections.

I think that there's a Showcase (the cheaper B&W reprints) of DP planned. But yeah, I also discovered all three creations through later appearances, but the original stuff is much better than I'd expected.
