Oprah has chosen The Road as her new Book Club Book!

Why do I care?

Because that means that the book is now A) in wide trade pb release about six months ahead of schedule, and B) available for under $10 thanks to the massive Oprah Discount Marketing Machine.

And it's a book I've been wanting for a long time.

The Road was excellent, though not what I expect Oprah fans to go for--I mean, dude. McCarthy is pretty bleak and brutal. (And this is one reason I love him.)

Yay for deserved publicity.

The book is incredible. Frightening and far from Oprah-like, but well worth everyone's time. I read it and had trouble sleeping for weeks.

It's really, really good. Totally not what I would have expected Oprah to choose...if you know what I mean -- it's bleak and chilling and just, yeah. Haunting, as noted above, it stays with you.

We passed that book around at work. I think 8/10 of us read it compulsively. I consumed it in a day, unable to stop reading. It has some of the most horrifying images I've ever read. It is a powerful, serious read.
