This weekend, I did something that went against every instinct I have, and which could result in my being shunned worldwide:

I ate breakfast at Old Country Buffet.

And I have no regrets. Especially since it's been five days and I'm not dead yet.

They had bread pudding, even.

If there is anyone in my family - blood relatives or the in-laws - that does not absolutely adore OCB and think it's the best thing since sliced bread, they have not made themselves known to me.

Personally, I avoid the place like the plague for the following reasons: Lines out the door and around the place. A crowd that will kill to get to that last chicken leg (or pork chop (strangely, the rush for the salad bar isn't quite as bad)). Fish that is almost as close to the Real Thing as Gortons. Buffet, which makes it too easy to overeat when I really should be losing about 80 pounds.

I never ate at Old Country Buffet until I met Patrick. He convinced me to go with him and, well, it has its charms. When I was on a hardcore low-carb diet it was actually a good choice for us for a dinner out, because I could load up on salad and veggies and roast beef and chicken while he ate the carbier stuff.

It's also an excellent place for people-watching if you can handle the weird vibe of a huge room full of people whose only goal is to Consume Mass Quantities.

My only problem with their breakfast is the quality of their bacon. I think they dunk it in the deep fryer or something to cook it -- bleh. I love bacon too much to see it treated like that.

Why? Why would you do such a thing? With The Spot, Crown Cafe, and Deluxe Town Diner in walking distance?

I swear, I leave you alone for less than a week, and see what happens. *sigh*

I have an even worse confession:

I worked at Old Country Buffet about 10 years ago!!

What's wrong with Old Country Buffet? I love that place. The only one around here is an hour away and I can't get there often enough. The only thing that has annoyed me about them is that one time I was there on "Steak Night" and they had no steak knifes. The steak wasn't too terribly hard to cut with my butter knife but it was still annoying.

I can't eat at Old Country Buffets any more, not since we went to one a few years back. It was close by a senior citizens home, and the denizens were in full force, smacking their lips and gumming their gruel.

I am traumatized to this day.

Band trip to Florida in 1993. All we ate the entire way down and back was buffets, primarily Old Country Buffet (btw, it's pronounced Buffet, like Jimmy Buffet ;) ).

So, yeah, I avoid it like the plague. My brother and his family, though, have their thanksgiving tradition of going to OCB, because years ago it was all they could afford. While they could afford better now, it's tradition, and you know how that goes.

Heh. We went there once with K, when she was in a program and this was one of the program's classic treats. Not awful, but not something I've sought out again.

More recently, we went to one that was a weird mix of OCB and Chinese- it had the OCB staples, plus made-to-order Mongolian stir-fry and sushi. Very odd- especially since the sushi wasn't bad. :) (Granted, I am a Midwesterner when it comes to sushi, but still...) This was when we were visiting J's ex for D's birthday celebration.
