So, I can either buy two half-seasons of 30 Rock for $18.89 a pop (or $26.98, going by list price), or I can snag the complete Season 1, on the same release date, for $32.49 ($49.98 list)?

I mean, I understand shows breaking things up by season (no one should be forced to own season 5 of Babylon 5, after all), but by half-season? Why?

Guessing here, but ... for the same reason that they still sell Stargate SG-1 in individual five-episode discs and full season sets when the full season set is a fraction of the price.

For me, being able to split up the cost of a purchase into more manageable chunks at only a slight price increase is worth it. I'm more likely to have $20 to spare four times than I am $75 to spare once.

I actually do own season 5 of Bab 5 - somebody gave it me - but I've never watched it; I stalled halfway through season 4, despite my insistence that it's my favourite-ever SF TV series. Do I gather that I was right to do so...?

The problem with Season 5 is that it shouldn't really exist in the form that it does.

When it appeared that Babylon 5 would be canceled after Season 4, JMS took some shortcuts to wrap up things as best as possible by the end of S4 (instead of stretching it out to a 5th season, like he originally planned). So, when it was renewed for Season 5, he had to stretch the remaining half-season of material to a whole season, making it rather uneven.

Besides, there's no Ivanova. What's B5 without Ivanova?

Yeah, i stopped the boxed dvd sets of B5 at Season 4.
The show had pretty much everything wrapped up by then
and i wasn't really interested in the telepath wars almost spin-off
eps of season 5 (which i vaguely remember seeing some of on tv)

Farscape drives me nuts with that. It's worse that their DVD's are so hard to find. I am gradually collecting the entire series, fifteen bucks at a time. I'm sure I could just order the entire series online somewhere for a fraction of what I will have eventually paid for it, but I'm so far along at this point that there's basically no turning back now.

Welllll,
