Phil Rizzuto has died.

He was the first baseball announcer I was ever aware of (back when WPIX would occasionally pre-empt my afternoon cartoons with a baseball game).

Phil Rizzuto was always "the voice of the Enemy" to me, but unlike so many other baseball broadcasters, he clearly knew the game.

And his voice was quite distinctive.

Finally, a persuasive speech by Ted Williams pushed Rizzuto into Cooperstown in 1994.

Williams, a member of the committee, argued that Rizzuto was the man who made the difference between the Yankees and his Red Sox. He was fond of saying, "If we'd had Rizzuto in Boston, we'd have won all those pennants instead of New York."

Good-bye, Phil.

Holy Cow!

This makes me feel almost as bad as when Red Barber died.

Yow. :(

he was also the spokesman for the money store (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDQHQkuv9l0). (they used to show these ads on my saturday morning cartoons -- who they were trying to reach, i have no idea.)
