I almost called this "Friday links." Wishful thinking.

1. ZOMG! Legion of Super-Heroes Happy Meal toys! Although WTF is with the assumption that the female characters don't rate?

2. Winners of Woot's Movie Poster Mashup Contest, featuring Transformers of the Caribbean and a great Spidey 3/Homer mashup (ganked from the awesome [livejournal.com profile] muse0fire)!

3. Inorganic dust can take on lifelike characteristics in space, including developing the helix structure. Very nifty article.

4. Slashfilm has scored a list of six potential film titles for the next Indiana Jones movie, all registered by Lucasfilm with the MPAA. I'm still betting on Indiana Jones and the Deathly Hollows, myself.

5. There's an official website for the Watchmen movie. Not much there yet, but at least they've got the Comedian's pin.

6. Counting Crows are working on a new album!

6.5 In related news, the whiny "Yeeeeeeeaaaaah" at the end of "Rain King" is the suckiest moment in an otherwise good song. Ever.

7. Life on Mars news (ganked from [livejournal.com profile] lizlet): Colm Meaney will be in the American remake (which means it might suck less than expected), and there's a spin-off of the original in the works!

7.5 Also, from this week's print edition of TV Guide: Season 2 of the original LoM will finally air in early 2008. Which is way too fucking long, and might be the first time I'm finally driven to teh intarwebs for a TV show.

8. This is why glass-top desks might be a bad idea.

9. Appleworks (née Clarisworks), dead at 23.

10. Finally, News.com has a short little history of the CFC lightbulb a technology that's cut our energy bill quite nicely, thank you very much.

Okay, seriously, I can't get past #1.

I mean, the inherent assumption is that since McD's separates out their happy meal toys into "boy" and "girl" toys that it's not so surprising that their "boy" toys don't have girl figures... but it also makes a HUGE assumption that girls aren't into Super Hero comic books...
The 12 year old in me that had a frakking incredible DC collection (my mother threw it away when I went to college and she sold the house... thousands of dollars worth of classic issues, my brother and I cried...) is more than a little pissed.

Didn't you know? If you give little boys girl-dolls, they will catch Teh Gay.

Long Live the Legion!

I completely hear you.

The cartoon has Saturn Girl, Phantom Girl, and Triplicate Girl in steady roles, with Shrinking Violet playing a key role in the Sun Eater story.

The cartoon even has the Emerald Empress!

Tharok, Validus, Mano, but no Emerald Empress? (Okay, they don't have the Persuader either, but who wants him?)

1) Given the recent depictions of many heroines, McD's probably doesn't want to get sued by some angry parent for distribution of porn to a child or something

10) The best thing about CFLs is that you don't need to buy the uber-expensive ones. The store-brand at Home Depot is cheaper, and works just as well (sometimes better) than many of the bigger names

What the fuck? BBC America was advertising LoM as part of this summer's line-up! I've been fucking watching the Saturday listings for signs of LoM since they started airing Hex again.

I refuse to acknowledge the existence of the Watchmen movie until Gilliam is brought back on board, dammit. Ditto any Good Omens adaptations.

You haven't seen season 2 of (the real, the true) Life on Mars? Get with the torrents, guy. Jesus. It's only some of the best SF ever shown on TV.

That does suck. You would think that they would use Saturn Girl and/or Triplicate girl at least. They are clearly core characters in the show.

I am often frustrated by the assumption that one type of toy or the other is a "boy toy" or "girl toy." Who says my daughter doesn't want race cars or superheroes? Who says my boy can't like puppies? They should just offer two choices and leave the unnecessary gender assumptions out of it.
