James Robert Cade has died.

Drink a cup of nasty-tasting colored water enhanced with electrolytes to honor his memory.

Or drink the proto-Gatorade that Bill Bowerman concocted in the 1950s. Bowerman (when he was coaching track at University of Oregon, and decades before he co-founded Nike) wanted to solve the same problem of athlete dehydration. His concoction included such ingredients (I'm blanking on the whole ingredient list) as a banana, honey, and a little bit of black tea. And was warm. His athletes tried it and spat it out. Bowerman said "You're expecting cordon bleu? If it helps you run, then it's good." The runners asked, then dared him to drink it. He drank it. He waited, smiling...then he spat it out without swallowing it. He said, "Okay, okay; it's sheep's piss."

I think the best line in the article was "[Gatorade] was tested on freshmen." It's almost like "the cure for the deadly virus was tested on freshmen."
