Haven't been posting much, thanks to work. While I've got the rare moment of free time, here are some links:

1. Want to see Sean Hannity have a meltdown and get his metaphorical ass handed to him? Who doesn't? Here you go.

2. How do you know your Clive Owen movie will suck? When the trailers have to recycle scenes from Ghost Rider to make it seem interesting.

3. Elayna got her first (and only) cell phone when she was 12 (a gift from the grandparents), and uses it minimally. She's the exception, it seems.

4. John Scalzi has created the Canonical Bacon Page. It's what the Internet has needed for years.

5. Want to know what inspired the CSI Miniatures Killer plotline? Here you go.

6. Hey, remember when Borders was actually an independent bookstore, and one you could count on to carry almost anything? Yeah, neither do I. ETA: More here.

7. The wonderful [livejournal.com profile] elionwyr points to vampire fiction that's about more than fucking. Really, there is such a thing, and plenty of it.

8. "I'm Fucking Matt Damon" won an Emmy!

9. Ever wonder how folks who jump ahead in line get away with it? Here are some reasons.

10. Finally, here's a live-action reenactment of Super Mario Brothers.

I just choked on my coffee during the Hannitty interview when the guy called me a fool.

Finally - people are wising up to these clowns!

I enjoyed how Hannity used the old standard of subject switching - You came to talk about the economy now prove to me the surge isn't working. I loved the use of unemployment figures, when those only cover people receiving unemployment benefits, not people who are, you know, unemployed.

That said, it's going to be a generation before we have any chance against these people in terms of spinning narrative, and we do not have 18-27% of the population fanatically in our pockets.

It makes me sad; I work with myth and narrative and I cannot even begin to comprehend how these people do their work, it is, to me, indistinguishable from magic. Most Fox New watchers are going to see that as an unqualified win for Hannity, as well.

Maybe I am overthinking; just aim low and drag as many down as you can. It seems to be the only effective strategy left.

What made me double check what planet I'm on was over the weekend when I read that Rove said that McCain's campaigning is wrong and untruthful.

"I'm Fucking Matt Damon" won an Emmy!

This fills me with a strange, tangential desire to write a song called "I'm the Goddamn Batman." Maybe Jim Steinman could write it?

*Borders employee here*: The second blog you linked had something that bothered me a great deal. I'd love to know where these employees are hearing these things, cuz it's so not the case.

If anyone in our stores is saying they're not allowed to special order something they need to be told otherwise. Especially this title. We can special order almost anything. Even if it's out of print we can usually find a copy somewhere. Tor, obviously, has easily available books so I really can't imagine it being hard to get copies.

I just verified that Sly Mongoose is available within 24 hours on our website and is thus available for Special Order since those are all filled from the same location. It's not in the stores, though, that much is easily verifiable on the site.

I'd post this as a comment on that page, but I think my employer would get cranky with me. :-p

Oh, and the other book is available and in store at at least one store. So someone has bad information on that one somewhere.

Oh hell I'll post on the LJ post you linked since that guy posted a reply in there too. Both books can be ordered, one is actually in at least one store, and somewhere some bookseller needs to be schooled on how to use our freakin' order system correctly and how to do their job.

I was stuck watching Fox News for a while a few months back (ah, family). I think 50% or more of the commercials were for scammy work-at-home schemes. Know your target market!

Did that Hannity episode make any media impact? I can just imagine the newspaper headlines and TV news segments if something like that occurred on a supposedly "serious" news/current affairs programme over here.

I find it deeply disturbing that Hannity is remotely regarded as anything other than an ass.

I thought of you this weekend; we went to the local small-town Oktoberfest and the fireman's booth was selling garlic mashed potatoes and smokies, 4 for $5, which they advertised as "20% BACON!". They were delicious.

Everything's Better With Bacon
Me and Chris on Vosges' "Mo's Bacon Bar" (deep milk chocolate flavored with applewood-smoked bacon and alderwood-smoked salt): Two thumbs up.
