At home, as we get Columbus Day off. Kinda weird; at Emory, the fall season was a dead zone for holidays (nothing between July 4 and Thanksgiving), but here, with Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Columbus Day, I've had a day off on each of the last three weeks.

A few links to start the week:

1. Paul Krugman won the Nobel prize for Economics! LIke Patrick Nielsen Hayden, I'd have figured it was for, "his distinguished work in the field of Being Right," but it's actually, "for his analysis of trade patterns and location of economic activity."

2. Sarah Beth Durst presents Tam Lin, with commentary.

3. The AV Club has a great interview with Patton Oswalt about movies and his upcoming film festival.

4. Chinese Democracy will hit on November 23!

5. Burn Notice has been renewed!

6. Marky Mark is not a fan of the "Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals" sketch from SNL. The best part of this article is when they mention that he's promoting Max Payne. Between that and The Happening, it's like The Departed never happened.

7. Mets prospect Eddie Kunz is blogging from the Arizona Fall League.

8. Fincher's Rendezvous With Rama looks like it's not happening.

9. Starcraft 2 will be released as three separate games. Or, more accurately, Starcraft 2 will cost three times as much as a normal game.

10. Finally, what the world needs now is the baconburger fatty melt. My cholesterol shot up just looking at the pictures.

Man, I hope the rest of Chinese Democracy is better than the wholly craptastic "Shackler's Revenge" track in Rock Band 2. Man, does that song ever suck.

Crap. I'm gonna have to wait and buy them used. Just hope they don't pull the "only three installs" b.s.

BIG reason I didn't spend my cash on either that or Bioshock.

If I'm going to spend $600 on a game, I want to own it, not do the equivalent of renting it from the supplier.

Paul Krugman disturbs me, in a very good way. Unlike many modern "liberals" (whatever that means in this context), he understands free trade, and unlike many political writers, he can separate ideology from knowledge. Even more astounding, when his knowledge contradicts his previously-held ideology, he modifies his ideology.

We can all learn a lesson from that.

His diatribes against corporate welfare are wholly laudable. His support of socialized medicine is not, but unlike many other proposals along these lines, one must actually argue against his; they cannot be dismissed out of hand, as so many others can be.

However, given the greatest sins of the current administration, he's been correct in opposing "trickle-down socialism" from day #1.

The email invite for Elayna's fundraiser went to my spam folder and I didn't notice it there until after I hit "Delete All." Can you send it again?

So I watched the SNL skit, and I have to say I agree with Marky. Unless there's some context I'm missing, it's pretty boring.

I like the *double* burger they show further down.

But add grilled onions to it like the third
version as well as the bacon. Maybe some pickles too.
And a nice tomato slice in each bacon/cheese sandwich bun.
You don't have to unhinge your jaw,
just nibble away at any edge, top to bottom, etc.

And have a portable defibrillator nearby.

I haven't seen SNL, but were we ever unclear that Marky Mark doesn't have a sense of humor?

I agree. I may be willing to buy an over-priced "trilogy" of games, but I won't spend one cent on any game that uses that DRM-limited-number-of-installs crap.

That's why I didn't buy, and won't be buying, Spore, even though I'm otherwise interested in it.

I didn't watch the skit but I still agree with Wahlberg. I stopped watching SNL around 92-94ish and any time I 've seen a random skit since it cements my opinion of "stopped being funny decades ago".

You're timing on the Tam Lin link is impeccable - I have just spent the last two days fiendishly re-reading (for the 1.7millionth time) the Pamela Dean version of it. I LOVE that book :)

You just wait till the Last Dangerous Visions comes out. Then you'll feel silly!

Now that I think about it, I'm surprised that Marvel hasn't come out with a comic called "Dangerous Visions".

I am pleased Krugman won the phauxbel. HE is definately one my favorite economists.

I really like burn notice. I don't know how accurate it is, but it feels increadibly well informed about spycraft.
