Let the Right One In
Nov. 2nd, 2008 04:44 pmI was still stuffy and weak this morning, but I wasn't about to pass up yet another chance to see this movie for free (I was too sick for the free screening at the Kendall Square on Wednesday). This one was at the Brattle, as a part of their Sunday Eye Opener series, which meant that it was easier for me to get to, as well (one bus and about 3/4 of a mile on foot).
This film was everything I'd hoped it would be. It's a horror film, sure, but it's as much a film about childhood, adolescence, young love, and growth. There are so many wonderful moments here, but I'm loathe to discuss them until this film's seen wider release; you should see the film knowing as little as you can about it.
What little that can be said about it is this: a young, socially awkward boy in a small Swedish town befriends a mysterious young girl who moves into his apartment building. Bad things start to happen.
For those who sometimes avoid horror movies, there are very few jump scares here -- it's not that sort of movie. Nor is there a ton of gore (honestly, beyond one scene in a hospital, most of the blood is tamer than any episode of CSI). There are way more moments of beauty here than moments of horror.
There's an American remake of this next year, which I'm sure will offer more action and more answers. See this version instead.
Yeah, it was worth it, even with my ongoing cold and my newfound exhaustion as the result of the walking in the cold. That said, I'm pretty much incapable of coherent thought right now, so I might have more to day about the movie tomorrow.
Here's the official website, which includes some theatres at which it's playing (although events like the one at the Brattle today aren't listed).
