Dollhouse

So, we finally watched it. It was like the lovechild of "meh" and "suck." But given the stories of Fox fucking with the pilot and demanding reshoots, I'll at least give it a week or two to see if we get something that might resemble Joss's actual vision.

Of course, the same thing happened with Firefly, but it still had a witty pilot*. So I'm not sure that's an excuse. And I can't imagine even the dumbest Fox exec saying, "hey, let's actually have no interesting dialogue at all. Also, could you throw a woman in a refrigerator? We've heard that's the latest trend nowadays."

*Wash or "The Train Job." Take your pick.

Perhaps you'll find out if it's good, when they actually get around to playing the pilot in 5-6 weeks? Can't forget (or forgive) Fox's magic 3-7-4-8-1 episode number layout.

I don't understand why Joss keeps piloting his new shows on Fox. I really do not. Given their record with his shows and given that any of the sci fi channels would give their left eyeballs to pilot one of his shows...fuck, any channel other than Fox would be an improvement...

They also cancelled "Angel" in the middle of the most promising season EVER...so I count it as two. :D

Ahhh, okay. Up here in Canuck-land "Angel" was on Fox/Global.

My take was "Interesting idea, Law & Order: SVU execution".

(Nooot a fan of SVU).

I'm glad I wasn't the only one. The whole concept seems unsustainable to me, and I thought the writing was mediocre at best. The quirks and banter and characterization that makes Whedon such a joy for me were missing.

I'm willing to give Dollhouse another try or two, but only because it's Joss Whedon. If his name weren't attached to it, I wouldn't even bother with that.

It seemed to have some narrative potential, but I agree that the concept seems unsustainable. And it's hard not to see it as just a vanity project to let Dushku play someone different every week. I'm not saying that's what it is, as I'm not in the heads of anyone involved with the show, but man, it sure watches like something that could be mistaken for that.

I've wisely avoided getting attached to Whedonverse shows, as they get killed off too soon.

I'm avoiding Dollhouse because it reeks of suck and FOX.

That pilot is the 2nd pilot. The first one will never air.

wednesday: (awesome!)

I had been mildly kicking myself for forgetting to tell one of the Tivos to grab it. Then I saw spoilers about Ellie Penn.

There are way more entertaining ways for me to get my PTSD trigger on, yo. That one looked about up there with "reading Mark Pendergrast for kicks."

I was content with the first episode (maybe it's just Eliza, though), but I wouldn't consider it a pilot any more than "The Train Job" was a pilot. More Fox fuckery going on there for sure. As for sustainability, I'm a bit confused as well, much like I was with "My Own Worst Enemy" (which was recently canceled by NBC). I'm hoping that the "pilot" will end up being very different than the rest of the series... In Joss we trust.
