So, we hosted little Savannah last night, and she was, as always, a charming and wonderful guest, making repeated visits to the gerbil cage (with no repeats of the infamous "stupid mouse" incident in which she released one of the gerbils, and then scolded it), Overall, it was a wonderful experience, as she's just a delight.

But it's damned clear that my lack of experience with toddlers (I only met Elayna when she was four, started doing parenty-type stuff with her when she was five, and basically became her stepdad when she was six) is showing.

I was fine giving the comforting hugs when she hurt herself ("Kitty bite me," although the "scratch" was both invisible and moved about ten times before settling on a finger), playing "cards" with her (a jigsaw puzzle), keeping her out of trouble, and cuddling her when she got cranky and tired.

But when she stuck out her foot and asked me to play "This Little Piggy," I was just stumped.

I mean, I know that the first piggy went to market. And the last one cried "wee wee wee" all the way home. But what the fuck did the other piggies do?

I bluffed. Must have worked. That, or one of the piggies really did go to Rome.

So, today was spent working from home. Which means I got about ten times as much done as normal, as no one interrupted me. And I still managed to relax a bit, too.

I also went out to secure a PO box, and ran by Kroger to pick up everything I thought I'd need for the key lime pie I want to make.

Alas, although I now have the key lime juice and most of the other ingredients, I'm two eggs short of what I need. Feh. Will have to make it later this week, instead.

In a few minutes, I'm off to Elayna's school to meet her and [livejournal.com profile] shadesong, so we can buy more books from her book fair. More books! Woohoo!

And visiting Amazon today to update my wishlist, I discovered something depressing: The Last of Sheila is not available on DVD. One of the most genuinely clever movies of all time, and I can't have it! I may actually cave and buy this on VHS. How sad.
