Yep, another issue of Bookslut is up. My column this month is a lazy miscellany. Which if fine, because I'm writing about Stephen King next month, and I'll piss someone off, because writing about King always does.

Oh, and yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] rollick sent me a naked picture of my editor. Which I guess every writer needs.

(I should put that last statement in context, shouldn't I?).

(But I won't. Although I'll also post props and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kizlj for sending me the text of the article a few days prior).

Edit. Why the fuck doesn't LJ support strikethru in the Subject lines?

FIrst, the Dreamwave version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been axed as of the next issue. That sucks, as it's been damned enjoyable once they were allowed to start using original plots (instead of adapting TV scripts).

Second, Powers is ending its series and starting over at issue 1. Which doesn't bother me by itself (although I've long thought the renumbering trend was moronic). But Bendis has decided that he's actually going to publish the first story of the new volume exclusively in Wizard Edge (which even Wizard subscribers will have to buy separately).

Which convinces me that when the current run ends, it's time to add Powers to the list of books I only get via trade. It's hella expensive anyway, and much as the letter column is fun, this is bullshit. Bendis really should be ashamed of himself (and I say this while still calling him the best damned writer in comics today -- good writing and good ethics don't always match up). Then again, so should anyone who buys Wizard Edge just to get the story.

And over on the Marvel side of things, they've announced six new books, most of which clearly suck as much (if not more) than the already-canceled stuff like Namor. The two possible exceptions are the new Captain America/Falcon series, written by Christopher Priest, and the new Avengers/Thunderbolts mini, written by Fabian Nicieza and Kurt Busiek. Priest has long been a solid writer, and Cap hasn't had a good storyline (not counting the Elseworlds one written by Dave Gibbons) since Waid left. Mind you, I still find Cap and Falcon boring charaters, so I don't think I'll check it out other than in trades, but Priest deserves a hit.

As for Avengers/Tbolts, Busiek is one of Marvel's top three writers. And Nicieza is one of the hacks who destroyed Marvel (creatively) in the '90s. I can't imagine that the suckitude of Nicieza won't weigh down the awesomeness of Busiek, but I'm curious about it, anyway.
