So, thanks to Google's own versions of Reed Hastings -- the Moe, Larry, and Curly imitators known as Louis Gray, Alan Green, and Mihai Parparita -- Google Reader has gone from being the killer web app to being an unmitigated disaster. Since Google has never shown even Netflix's ability to rectify a mistake, I'm assuming that the product I know and love is dead.

So, since there's no reason for me to bloat my web browser's memory footprint with a reader that's slow, ugly, and incapable of sharing items or showing me items my friends share in its own interface, I want to know what else is out there. What's the best RSS newsreader for the Mac? I know it's not Mac Mail, right? I'd rather not pay the $10 for Reeder just to see if it works. Is NetNewswire solid? What other ones are out there (web-based is fine, too)? Obviously, sharing is more meaningless now (since I can't count on everyone else being there), although certainly the ability to share to Twitter (multiple accounts), FB, LJ, etc would be nice. But ease of use, ability to handle a big OPML file, and a slick interface would be nice. Reader integration wouldn't suck, if only to keep track of read messages if I'm on a different computer (and in case Google actually gets its corporate head out of its ass).

Although I'm looking for a Mac/Web option, it's worth mentioning Windows and Linux versions (as well as iOS/Android ones), since I suspect others are in the same boat.

(Most of yesterday's deals, including more Harry Potter, Lego, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and huge Buy 2, Get 1 Free video game sale, are still active.)

Now that it's November, Amazon's got their pre-Black Friday sales in full swing. Lots of DVDs today. Unless otherwise noted, all are standard DVD (not Blu-Ray).

The Deal of the Day is the complete Arrested Development for $28.99 (68% off)! If you don't own this series, get it. It's as funny as TV gets.

The 20th Anniversary Edition of Beetlejuice is $5.99 (58% off) on DVD, $9.71 (72% off) on Blu-Ray.

The Blu-Ray set of Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age is $10.99 (59% off). Not the potentially slow ship time here.

The Others is $5.49 (63% off) on Blu-Ray (and doesn't appear available on standard DVD anymore).

Other good deals: Inception ($7.59/62% off), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ($5.99/70% off), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($6.65/56% off), Are You Being Served ($42.99/57% off), The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Two Disc Edition ($10.05/70% off), The Twilight Saga: New Moon Two Disc Edition ($10.20/69% off), Halloween - the real version, not Rob Zombie's craptastic hubrisfest - ($4.99/67% off), The Thing - Carpenter version - $4.99 (62% off), and the two-disc anniversary edition of The Wizard of Oz ($9.99/52% off).

In video games, Homefront is $19.99 for the PS3/Xbox (33% off). Red Steel 2 with Motion Plus for the Wii is $25.99 (57% off), or $13.48 (33% off) if you already have Motion Plus.

Finally, in books, the new Steve Jobs bio by Walter Isaacson is $17.88 (49% off), and (just for [livejournal.com profile] murnkay and other fans of Wait, What), the hardcover edition of X-Men: Schism is $13.01 (48% off).

By the way

If you are at all a geeky Jets fan (like, say, [livejournal.com profile] popfiend), you should listen to at least the second half of the 10/27 ("Berenice") Stuff You Should Know podcast (found more easily on iTunes than on the HSW site), to hear Jon Hodgman riff on Nick Mangold as the man uniting sports and geekdom.
