Note: I actually wrote this yesterday, but it failed to post. Yay, technology!

It is exactly one month* until I turn forty.

I'm not a big fan of big, lavish celebrations, and certainly don't intend to host some sort of blowout party; I drink maybe as much alcohol in a year as the characters on Cougar Town** drink in an episode. I'll likely host a gaming day and arrange for good food to be eaten, unless there's an amazing movie opening that weekend (and per IMDB, the only movie I care about opening on April 6 is the new Whit Stillman, which isn't opening anywhere but LA and NYC).

That said, I've had a query or two about what I might desire for that special day. So I'll steal a tradition from [personal profile] theferrett, and offer my Greed List***.

First, the same disclaimer I've offered in the past:

I'm not really looking for, or expecting, any gifts. I don't consider friendship to be something that hinges on people giving gifts, nor does the quality/quantity of gifts given necessarily relate to how good a person is. That goes doubly so, in these times when most people I know (ourselves included) are dealing with various monetary frustrations. A wish of "happy birthday," a Facebook message, a someecard, all of those are likely to make be happy.

And although there are things I'd like, and certainly things I end up needing (see the sneaker comment below), there's nothing that's in the "ZOMG, I MUST HAVE THIS" camp. I've got books, games, movies, just about every low-end luxury I could ever want. The only obscenely expensive gift I could imagine is the MLB.tv subscription, although one could argue that allowing me to catch every Mets game will not exactly be a favor, given the outlook for them this year.

- Obviously, I've got an Amazon Wishlist, which has a few hundred items on it. My priority choices there are pretty accurate.

- A subscription to Kill Screen magazine. Kill Screen is the sort of magazine I've been wishing for for years, people. But no way can I justify the yearly cost out of our own limited budget, alas.

- Any of the Lansdale, Hornby, or Vachss shirts listed here, size L.

- Any of the Tiny Plastic items from the Kingdom of Loathing store.

- Gift cards to athletic shoe stores (or places like Target that carry them). As I've mentioned before, I've been walking a lot to try to get in shape and manage my diabetes. And I'm trying to walk to and from work daily. That's nearly thirteen miles a day, which is over sixty miles a week (or more, depending on the weekend activities). Walking shoes and sneakers wear out after after 350-500 miles. You can do the math and see why this is something I need. Stores nearby include Foot Locker, Famous Footwear, and Olympia Sports, and there's a good indie store, too. Although I generally prefer buying shoes in person, Zappo's gift certificates are also an option (since they make shipping and returning pretty simple).

- Gift cards to nice restaurants. Tempo is one of my favorites, but anyone who knows me knows that I like good food, period. Given the diabetes, I generally prefer traditional restaurants instead of ice cream/dessert places, but the sugar-free chocolate mousse at Finale is kind of awesome.

For those who would prefer to make donations, charities I actively support include BARCC (supporting my wife in the BARCC Walk For Change would be awesome, since I'll be out of town for the Walk this year), the Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation, and either of The National Association to Protect Children or Protect.org (noting that the first is a charity, the second a PAC, but I support both wholeheartedly).

And for any KOL players, I'm "Yendi" on there, and never say no to in-game cards or gifts (that said, I don't think I need anything there, per se).

*Using "month" here to represent the cycle from March 8 to April 8, of course, not a 28-day cycle.

**I suspect my love of this show is not only influenced by the high quality, but also the fact that it's a show about a bunch of forty-somethings who live a generally realistic defiance of their age.

***Yes, of course I'd like things like world peace, happiness for all of my friends, financial security, etc. This isn't a wish list, though; it's a list of things what one can buy. Ferrett explains more here.
. Also, if you're thinking about special wishes, here's Steve Martin.

On the one hand, I'm generally a skeptic on almost every front.

On the other, I am a sports fan, which means I live in a world filled with a ludicrous set of superstitions.

With that in mind, and speaking as a Jets fan, I fully support Gronkowski's desire to become the next Madden cover player.
