David Eddings has died.

I've done my fair share of snarking at his fiction in recent years, but the fact remains that Pawn of Prophecy was what I cut my adult fantasy teeth on when I was ten (along with Pern and Xanth), and for all its flaws, The Belgariad remains one of my fonder childhood memories.

well...crap

Some of his stuff was a bit, errm...well, yeah.

That being said, I loved his Ellenium. Mostly for the character "Sparhawk"* who was essentially any Clint Eastwood character but in gothic plate and a sword.

* - altho that has to be one of the most un-original names, ever.

Aw, man. I am generally pretty unaffected by the passing of authors that I love - I have their books and that is the most I have ever had of them so it isn't a personal loss to me - but this IS sad. Eddings' books are my go-to books when there is nothing else I feel like reading, when I'm flailing around bored because so much just SUCKS right now.

The Belgariad was something that I would re-read whenever I felt the need to visit old friends. Though some of the stereotypes and plots were kind of eh, I really loved a lot of his characters.

That sucks. He ran hot and cold in my opinion but when he was on he wrote some of my favorites. Rest in peace Dave.

Aw, his books are terrible to read as an adult, but just like you, The Belgariad was my first real fantasy series. I'll always think of him whenever someone has to go on a quest to find some stone and there is banter.

He also sounds like he was a decent fellow.

I'm going to have to pull all the old books out again. I just know it.

I haven't read them in years, but he certainly did influence the direction my reading took with his books. I didn't like some of his later stuff, but he will still be very much missed.

He did some good work over the years.

I'll be giving his stuff to my kids to read.

Were the books great? probably not. Did I love them? yes.

And they were my first real taste of fantasy as a genre so I'll always be grateful to the Mr. Eddings for that.

I share the same fondness; for all I can identify the flaws now, those will always be familiar worlds to return to.
