Between new free games that are actually good, and price drops, there's a LOT of really good stuff in the App Store right now:

Games that normally cost money, but are free right now:

1. Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer. Does anyone not own this yet? All the expansions are on sale, too, but even the base game is worth owning. Ascension multiplayer will vanish at the end of the year (when Playdek loses the license), but the game's great as a single-player experience, too.

2. Diamond Fox. A simple but fun puzzle game. You have to move squares containing foxes left, right, and down to get them to diamonds. A sort of mix of Tetris and Sokoban.

3. Banana Kong. Yet another fun endless-runner (side-scrolling variety).

Games that are Freemium/FTP/ad-supported, but still worth getting

1. OnePath: A simple tilt-based puzzle game with good abstract images.

2. 5BY5: Another simple puzzle game, in which you have to slide tiles to form groups of numbers that add up to 5. A little sudoku-like.

3. Universal Adventure Land: Clearly inspired by Rogue Legacy, this gives you random traits ("Diabetic Parachuting Pirate," so eating cake hurts you, etc), and puts you in a random side-scrolling environment where you jump and shoot until you die. Goofy fun.

4. Lionheart Tactics. I'm a sucker for anything with "Tactics" in the title, and while I'd prefer a premium game you pay for once, the FTP stuff seems mostly built around cooldown times, and you can still get gold and other things by just playing the game.

5. Smash Hit: Essentially an abstract light-gun rails game, but surprisingly fun. You're moving forward through a passage, and are throwing balls at crystals and glass objects. The former give you points and more balls (yeah, I know). The latter need to be destroyed so you don't crash into them (which also costs you ammo). It's a lot of fun, and kind of gorgeous.

6. Tanuku Forest: A beautiful game that, for lack of a better comparison, is a more mellow, animal-themed version of Jetpack Joyride. You play a forest spirate attempting to rescue animals and collect Kami, and it's basically a one-touch control where holding down makes you fly, and letting go drops you (just like JJ). Really nice, and with some wonderful music.
