yendiSo, according to the answer I received to my help ticket, the comment slowdown is the result of the news post. Apparently, whenever a new LJ News post gets created, comments go to hell.
Long-term, of course, I'd like them to fix the actual bug. But it would seem that a good short-term solution would be to not bother with the News posts unless they've got something to say. Which would stop the comment fiasco for at least six months, based on the most recent updates.
