Regarding your decision to run House a minute long last night but not build it into the programming schedule (thus ruining it for anyone who used a DVR):

Fuck you.

A lot.

Bonus: Not making the episode available on Hulu for eight days.

This is why people use bittorrent. And why I hope whichever executive made this decision is the one who greenlit Lone Star, and is thus a short-timer.

No love,

It's available on Hulu Plus the next day. Not that that is much comfort, I understand, but FYI.

Can you set/modify the recording time on a DVR? I don't have one; but in the old days with a VCR, I always programmed in a couple of extra minutes before and after the scheduled start/stop.

Oh, OK.

I don't know if I've ever needed to follow that many shows at once.

Ironically, I'm watching House on my Tivo and just checked LJ and saw this. Well, crap!

So the networks are still Tivo-busting? I know that E.R. was notorious for it in its final seasons. (I'd stopped watching it long before that point)

Even with U-Verse four-channel DVR you can work around it by recording the next thing, but then you have full shows that you didn't intend to watch cluttering the box. It's enough of a pain when football or Obama delays the start time of shows so you have to guess what extra things to record.

I've been having overrun problems when DVRing Glee and Raising Hope. Fairly annoying...

This kind of crap is exactly why I find myself turning to BitTorrent more and more often lately.

So the networks are still Tivo-busting?

Surely they realise that they're shooting themselves in the foot with this nonsense. All TiVo-busting does is make people turn to BitTorrent, which is going to cost them a lot more advert views than a bit of TiVo skip-ahead.

They've been clipping the last minute or so of Glee for so long, that I finally just gave up and started downloading it instead of recording it.

I'm always more-than-happy to watch shows 'legally', given the opportunity, but if the networks insist on making too difficult (or trying to force me to choose between the over-running show and whatever I want to watch after it), then it's their loss.

If they don't want me to watch their adverts, so be it.

Me too.

I don't even "get" commercials any more, and that's probably a good thing.

Superior product, superior viewing experience, doesn't treat you like you were a complete asshole for wanting the product enough to go out of your way to get it. What's not to love?

Hulu Plus has a free trial (I think?). You could sign up just long enough to catch that last minute. I had Hulu Plus for a while, but I gave it up. I hated watching the same ad over and over and OVER. Also, if you think the House delay is bad - they delay White Collar by 30 days. I nearly screamed. I don't get why networks don't realize they're the reason bittorrent traffic is so high.

Strange. TiVo picked up the full episode for me, so at least their schedule db had the right start & end times.

Reminds me of Sunday nights about 15 years ago - there were so many good shows on at the same time (and no torrents/web viewing) that I had 3 VCRs hooked up so I wouldn't miss anything.

Now we have a 3-tuner MythTv (and a dual-tuner TiVo for problematic channels like Showtime that won't allow the cable box output to be redirected over firewire to an external storage device).

You're presuming a level of intelligence and intuitiveness that these executives rarely exhibit.

How come the only channel doing it consistently right is The Hub? It's at the point where AFAICT my DirecTV DVR adds a minute, even when we tell it not to, because everyone sucks.

we will often torrent shows that we have already DVRd, because it is seriously faster and less of a pain to watch the torrent, although part of that is that our remote control keys are mapped more conveniently for downloaded video than they are for DVR, and that is under our control.

I just would like it if they would switch to going all product placement already and let us download the shows without guilt. I don't mind there being product placement or even embedded advertising in my downloads, as long as I can watch the downloaded mp4 or mkvs at my convenience on the device of my choice. It's not the advertising that makes me turn to torrents for shows I've recorded and DVDs I own, it's that I want to watch on my device of choice.

This is also why some of us have stopped watching TV shows in general.
