One thing that's missing from the UK coverage of this story is why the league said no to the billion dollar deal with Fox. Obviously Fox are evil, but presumably it's not that.
Does each team sell TV rights to its (home?) games?
The Fox deal was ludicrously underpriced (because McCourt was willing to take a lowball deal for cash upfront), and would have lowered the bar for local TV deals for other teams.
ETA: And yes, each team gets to negotiate local rights, but must get league approval on deals (because of revenue sharing).
The Dodgers owner who has mismanaged the team into bankruptcy shares a name with the author of Angela's Ashes (although, in fairness, the literary McCourt was still alive when the awful businessman became owner).
