I'd never heard of comedian Sam Morril, and based on this piece and this one, it might have something to do with his having no actual talent or sense of humor. Trigger warning for rape "jokes."

In case anyone anywhere doesn't already know that Abercrombie and Fitch is an awful place that doesn't deserve any business unless you're an arsonist, here's more proof. Incidentally, I typed "my friends who like Abercrombie and Fitch" into my Facebook search and was happy to have no one turn up.

On the privilege afforded to Frank Rich's (largely untalented) son (and the Times's complete willingness to pretend no such privilege exists; if you believe that the Public Editor really served any real ombudsman purpose, I've got this bridge in Brooklyn you can have cheap!). The article also touches on the similar (but at least generally acknowledged) privilege Lena Dunham experiences.

Happier links:

There's a web series ("Blue") starring Julia Styles. I'm posting this pretty much so I remember to check it out. Between Netflix, Amazon, and shorter venues, keeping up with the first-run stuff online is getting really tough.

And Kill Screen's piece on Hannah Epstein's attempt to undermine corporate copyright intrigues me.

And there's a new Humble Bundle, with Doublefine games! I'm waiting for payday to snag it, but having all of these games finally on the Mac is a good thing.

Kind of torn on the Amberc rombie & Fitch thing.

On one hand, my gut reaction is "thats fucked up."

On the other, he has the right to sell his shit to whoever he wants. And id rather have people like him out in the open.

Wow.

Have you seen an image of the CEO? I absolutely think he was a doofy-looking kid, because he's a really doofy-looking adult, and he wants to shape (or at least clothe) the in-crowd because he wasn't part of it. Some people go the other way (see "Heathers") in relation to not being part of the in-crowd, which might also be unhealthy. One particular piece of self-delusion I'd like to point out to him is with this idea:"We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. " More and more American kids are overweight to obese, let alone the ones who are healthy and athletic and more than a size 10. What are you gonna do when the majority of all-American kids go with their friends to the store where everyone can get clothes, not just the size-10-or-less ones?

Also, I've watched many episodes of Blue but have gotten out of date; I like it a lot, too.

I remember when I was a teenager and Caroline Kennedy won a coveted summer internship as the New York Times. Now, admittedly, she was a very smart and talented teenager, but gee... What about the rest of us without her connections?

Lena Dunham has so much good press; I'd not seen much here in Britain about her background. Colour me not surprised. of course, I watched Girls when it first aired here after a lot of media press and wasn't impressed. (I gave up after the first episode.) Gee, your parents have been supporting you 100% since you graduated from university (and they probably paid your tuition also, I'd bet) and you're upset that after two years of paying your NYC rent and handing you money for living expenses that they're telling you to get a job?

As someone who was in the first generation of university graduates in her family, worked 20-30 hours a week through her undergrad years, obtained all the financial aid she possibly could to offset tuition and fees, earned high grades in high school to qualify for scholarships, earned high grades as an undergraduate to obtain a teaching job right after graduation in a very poor market (there was a glut of teachers in that state then) and taught high school full time whilst working part-time on an MA (because I couldn't pay my rent, feed myself and pay my graduate tuition without working full time), I had absolutely no sympathy for Dunham's character. I kept thinking of young adults from working class families whose parents couldn't afford to support them in the way Dunham's character had become accustomed to even if the parents had wanted to do so.

Yeah, I am a socialist... ;)
