Just finished speaking to fifteen faculty and grad students on techniques for online communication Spent over an hour. Did a fucking kick-ass job. I feel drained. I'm getting coffee now.
A little of both. I was presenting to the group of folks taking the ECOL seminar, which is designed for faculty to put content online, and I was talking about best practices for maintaining an online discussion (especially as a part of a class). In theory, it was platform-independent, but inevitable questions came up, of course. But most of it was the former -- explaining the differences in types of communication, not to mention the added barrier added by age-based perception of those media. The biggest thing to hammer home was the time investment needed, and the need to set expectations up front and overtly.
Nope. Emory doesn't do distance learning -- it's all technology-enhanced learning instead. And we use Blackboard, FirstClass, and (to a much lesser extent) WebCT.
