Jul. 4th, 2002 05:38 pmI'm really starting to lose respect for Warren Ellis.
First, other than Transmet, he hasn't exactly written anything good in a long time -- his Avatar stuff has been nothing short of shite, in fact, while Planetary and Ministry of Space have been mostly awol.
Second, he's become a pretentious git about not liking superheroes or writing non-creator-owned characters. This in spite of the fact that A) whatever you think about the quality of such stuff, it's what keeps the rest of the industry afloat; and B) he made much of his name and money writing both, including a little book called the Authority.
And his recommendations have been utterly lame. His latest column recommends that pretentious beyond belief XXX Live Nude Girls, a comic that was practically the prototype of PVP's Graphamaximo storyline. Which is his right -- everyone is allowed to like stuff that sucks. But he goes off on folks who disagree as if they're the embodiment of pure evil or somesuch.
And now he's closing his forums (in which he would automatically close any thread that ever talked about any superhero book), and basically whining about the state of comicdom, while using his mailing list as little more than an attempt to shill his projects. His latest being a site that lists his recommendations for non-hero comics, with extra-convenient links to allow you to order them (and making him a nice cut).
It's getting depressing. He's writing one decent book right now, and it's about to end. His talentless protege (Mark "I couldn't write shit if I used my ass" Millar) and his overrated mentor (Grant Morrison) are fucking up half the books in the industry. And he sits there griping about how much the industry sucks, while spending doing nothing but whining and self-promotion.
I miss the old Warren Ellis.
That's all. Drive through.
