Denied!

So, I had a huge craving to listen to the original cast recording of On the Twentieth Century an amazingly underrated and overlooked musical. It's quite possibly the only cd you'll find with both Kevin Kline and Madeline Kahn. It also features John Cullum and Imogene Coca (it may be her last performance, actually), the book and lyrics are by Comdem and Green, and the music is by Cy Coleman. And it's one of the CDs I haven't burned to MP3 yet.

So I slip it into the computer. Nothing. Eject, insert. Nothing. I try another CD. Nothing. I restart, try a cd-Rom. Nothing. The drive is dead.

This sucks ass.

But it gets worse.

I dig around and find my trusty boombox that's been my stereo since college. Plug it in, and it works just fine, plays tapes, the radio tunes, etc. Plop the CD in, though, and nothing. The motor doesn't even attempt to spin.

*sigh*

So if I want to listen to music in my office, I can only listen to the 8GB of MP3 files I have. None of which include the ones I'm looking for (and, go figure, I can't find them on the Net, although I can have my pick of songs by Korn or Creed).

Long term plan is to get a nice firewire drive (cheaper than fixing this one). Short-term, anyone have an obscure '70s musical on MP3 and wanna email it to me?

Probably not for a few weeks. Next weekend is Freshman Weekend at Emory, which means I'll be working all day both days, and not only will I need to get to sleep somewhat early, but a large group of people won't be all that conductive to stress relief. :-) And the weekend after is Dragoncon, of course. And the weekend after that is too far off to start planning. :-)

I was in this, when I was in high school, in my summer theatre group. I was in the chorus, but had a great time with the whole thing. I still remember the main music, and had no idea that there even was an original cast album! My favorite line was "It's not a contract, it's more like a Valentine!"

My pal Doug was Lily's boy toy in the play, and at 15 got to make out with the 22 year old playing Lily. Whoo-hoo! I should see what he is up to...

I didn't know anyone else had even *heard* of this musical!

Wow! I'm as surprised as you are -- I really thought this one had faded into total obscurity. Doug's role was the one Kevin Kline had, by the way. Sounds like he had a great time. :-)

Doug ended up as our Barnum when we did Barnum a couple of years later. Summer theatre was a fabulous experience--I really loved doing it and I made some grreat friends, who I really need to get back in touch with...

Barnum was also a Coleman show. Damned fine lyrics -- saw it when it opened on broadway with Jim Dale and Glenn Close, and I've got the CD somewhere.

I hope so! We're doing a big trip on Friday night to Edo (Japanese hibachi place right near our house), which y'all are welcome to attend (just let us know ahead of time, since it's going to be a big reservation -- we're already in double digits!). Haven't figured out the rest of the schedule yet, but we're working on it. :-)
