Book Nook is moving! And the new location is walking distance from our house! They've only moved the DVDs, music, and a few books in so far, but they expect the move to be complete by November! Woohoo! Used books close at hand!

We're going to be so fucking broke.

I have to go to book nook someday. Never been. Maybe they have the missing book, the one I can't have. I ordered it used from amazon, they sent me the right title, wrong author. I found it on e-bay, set my max bid for $30, it went off over $40. I've found the one before and the one after it in the trilogy on used bookstore shelves for less than list price, but the middle book, I can't have. Matadora, by Steve Perry.

The best used book store in Atlanta is the Atlanta Book Exchange. It's where I spend all the money I don't have. And they are nice. And they give me random "book addict" discounts.

Anything in particular you're looking for?

I find one mildly annoying side effect of reviewing books is that I don't really spend time in used book stores any more. I don't get to read nearly as much just for pleasure, for one thing. If I have time for pleasure-reading, I generally end up reading something that I didn't plan to buy, but that showed up in my mailbox anyway and that I was somewhat curious about. And the rest of my reading time is spent on review books, which I have to get as soon as they get out, so I either get review copies or reimbursed copies of the hardbacks.

I never used to buy hardbacks, because I don't much like them. They don't travel well, they're unwieldy compared to paperbacks, and they take up too much shelf space. I like the more compact package. Now almost all the new books I get are hardbacks. :^P

I sorta miss that sense of having a dozen things I was looking for in used bookstores, and having the pleasure of the hunt.

Nothing I'm looking for right now, but the thrill of browsing is joy enough. I usually manage to find something. It was a bit nicer, a few years ago, when I was just getting into the Scribblies and de Lint and Ford, when I regularly had a list of books to search for. Now, there are few things I need to track down, but there's always a little gem somewhere, some Pat Wrede or Jane Yolen or an anthology that I need to add to the collection.

I like hardbacks, although I prefer the smaller ones, ones that are trade paperback sized at best. They just have more of a sense of comfort for me than paperbacks.

Yeah -- they said that the landlord is thinking of renting the old location to Walgreens and pushing Paper Chase out, too (not like they haven't moved ten times already).

I'm just no good at browsing. Even for books. I like bookstores, but I hate shopping, and browsing to me combines the worst aspects of wandering aimlessly, shopping, and procrastinating about all the necessary things I should be doing. I'm an in-and-out shopper… hence the wish-list, which gives me an excuse.

I'm not big on shopping in general, but for books, it's a different story. It's not shopping. It's looking through a gold mine for the biggest gold nugget.

That said, I need the wish list, if only to be able to track what's coming out when, and make sure I get the books I need (as opposed to the ones I merely buy on impulse).
