Anyone familiar with Brust must read [livejournal.com profile] rollick's hysterical review of his latest book at http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=rollick&itemid=79221

Of course, I'm still planning on buying it in hardcover, possibly as early as today. :-)

Great write-up! That sort of dialog was the main charm of "500 Years After" to my mind, at least after I got over being very irritated by it. Still, it sounds like he may have overdone it this time. Plus I hate reading first books in trilogies, especially before the others are available. I don't have the desire to keep bunches of partial plots straight any more.

"500 Years After" was one of my favorite Brust books. I do like the Dumas-pastiche / Dumas-parody style, and I like the elevated language of the Khaavren series in general.

But this time around… man, I really do think he overdid it.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] yendi, thanks for the mad props, yo.

Excess IS rebellion.

Count me in the "I should just stop reading books with not yet written sequels" camp.

No wallowing necessary. It's quite easy to dance along the surface, observing as you go.

That's why I don't buy comics, generally. I get sick of the wait, and the lack of resolution. I don't get much out of the little driblets of story – no tension, just frustration and apathy.

That said, when the installments come in great huge chunks — like with George R.R. Martin's "Ice and Fire" series, for instance — it's a different story. I don't regret having read those as they came out, even though the two-plus year lag between books is just murder.

you say that as though you actually do it. I just should, I don't actually do.

I don't mind a 2 year lag. It's the 6 - 8 year lags that steam me.

I've already read it, and did enjoy some of the language used....I think it was primarily a device to remind you that these people are of a very different culture.
