So, [livejournal.com profile] elorie and Raven came over last night, and they both managed to survive the experience of eating a slice of my pie, so I guess it was okay. Personally, I like it, but I think that I may add a little bti of rum the next time I make it -- the texture and flavor of the pie both seem to be calling out for it.

Alas, I somehow managed to fall asleep before 9. Hard. Woke up at 7 today, with only vagure memories of [livejournal.com profile] shadesong asking me if I wanted to wake up last night. It was rude as hell of me, with guests over, and weird, considering that in a house with two children, and the frequently-asleep-before-10 [livejournal.com profile] shadesong, to be asleep before everyone else. Guess the stress of the heaviest work weeks of the winter (last and next) is taking its toll.

Anyway, for those who want it, the recipe:

Ingredients:
2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, chopped.
1 can (14 OZ) Eagle Sweetened Consensed Milk.
1 envelope unflavored gelatin
1/3 cup of water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup whipping cream, whipped
1 pre-made pie crust (I used a graham cracker one).

In heavy saucepan over low heat, melt chocolate with condensed milk. Remove from heat.

Meanwhile (but wait until chocolate is nearly melted!), in small saucepan, sprinkle gelatin over water. Wait one minute, then, over low heat, stir until gelatin dissolves.

Stir gelatin into chocolate mixture. Add vanilla. Cool to room temperature. Fold in whipped cream. Spread into crust.

Chill three hours.

A few notes: First, this was from the Eagle Brand cookbook. I'd imagine any condensed milk would do, but we had Eagle in the house.

And, as said above, adding a small amount of rum (small, because the alcohol won't cook out) might add a bit more flavor to it. Since we didn't have any rum in the house, it probably wouldn't have been an option for me even if I'd thought of it.

Third, it's much, much better if eaten with some homemade whipped cream. Much.

I wouldn't add rum. I'd suggest a liquor such as Amaretto or Godiva. Mm.. Godiva chocolate liquor! We have some, you know, so if you want to make it again, I'll nobly sacrifice some of my grog for the cause. :)

"Survived the experience of eating it." More like "scarfed up with astonishing rapidity." Like I said, the magic word..."chocolate"...combined happily with two other magic words, "chiffon" and "pie"....Mmmm.
