So, Elayna and [livejournal.com profile] shadesong, aware of the fact that I always miss Father's Day (since Elayna is down with her grandparents), threw me a surprise early Father's Day brunch, and took me to Crescent Moon (which is tied with Flying Biscuit as my favorite brunch place). We had a yummy meal (I had the salmon florentine), and then we headed into Decatur proper to hit Java Monkey.

Along the way, we had noticed that the Decatur Arts Festival was going on, so after caffeinating, we spent a lot longer in Decatur than expected. We hit all the booths, and saw some beautiful stuff. Nifty sculptures, paintings, etc. I bought a gorgeous Cavallin & Co set of playing cards that are a reproduction of a 1819 French deck. I wish they had this deck online -- it's just amazingly beautiful. You just don't find decks of cards like this anymore. It even comes in a handcrafted box, complete with a wax imprint.

We also got a caricature of Elayna made, saw lots and lots of dogs (including the largest dog I've ever seen -- a great dane who was bigger than some horses), bought gifts for a friend (both [livejournal.com profile] shadesong and I found stuff for the same friend separately -- it was stuff that just screamed this person's name), and wished we had a lot more money than we did. Got lots of business cards and urls, as there were some talented people there who should be supported.

Great moment: We're sitting at Javamonkey, and looking over the program.

Me, to [livejournal.com profile] shadesong: Oh, cool. Kristian Bush is here.
Elayna: Isn't George Bush the guy who cheated?
Me: Yeah, but Kristian isn't like him. He sings songs protesting George.
Elayna: Oh. Then how come he has the same name?
Me: Just because they've got the same name doesn't mean they're related. There are good people named Bush. They just don't happen to be close relatives of George.

After a couple of hours, we headed home, where they gave me their presents:

From Elayna, a copy of the new Weird Al CD ("Poodle Hat"), and the Peter David novelization of The Hulk.

From [livejournal.com profile] shadesong: Season 1 of Angel.

It's a good Father's Day. :-)

I went to Father's Day, and an art festival broke out

Good thing it wasn't New York City. You never know when those kids from "Fame" are gonna break into a song-and-dance number and back up traffic downtown.

That's a great new icon of you and Elayna.

the Peter David novelization of The Hulk.

*sigh*

Season 1 of Angel.

Rock on! This should be quite a treat for you to watch, since you've told me you missed a few eps that season.

Happy Early Father's Day :-) Rupert always misses out on it with my boys too, because it always falls right after they go to their father's for the summer. Too bad really, Rupert's a much better dad. Maybe we ought to celebrate it early here, too.

Just for the record....

Having been very much in your situation, I can second the emotion that being a daddy is a lot of fun, even though it can be trying....

Congrats. I know how that kid thinks, from reading 'song and seeing her in action... if she thinks highly of you, that's an honor no academy can top.

That is so sweet!!! I'm glad they recognized you for that special day. Being a single mom, Mother's Day doesn't get noticed much here. He's only seven, I cut him slack. LOL However, sometimes I think being single means I should get some recognition for Father's Day too....aren't I the one who taught the boy to pee standing up? LOL (I threw Fruit Loops in the water and told him to aim.)

I was a bit older than seven when I began giving my single mother cards and presents for Father's Day. The idea was actually spawned by a Hallmark card built for the purpose.

Of course, I give my kiddle presents for Mother's Day. Without him, I wouldn't be, you see. Heh, I'll use almost any excuse for gift-giving.

I parented Elayna all by my lonesome for six years. I didn't get anything for Father's Day.

*snif*

I'm just glad I was able to do this for [livejournal.com profile] yendi before Elayna left for the summer. He so deserves full daddy accolades!

Happy Father's Day!!

Tell me, why *do* people always insist on taking their darn dogs to art festivals? And babies in strollers the size of SUVs? Not as if it's easy to negotiate all those booths with dogs and babies in the way....
