So, we rented Sweet Home Alabama and watched it last night. A number of people, including a bunch of folks I actually know and respect, called this a very cute movie.

I call it one of the biggest pieces of shit I've ever seen.

I don't mind romantic comedies -- having just seen Down With Love and The Guru in the last week, I can enjoy them. Hell, I can deal with the predictability of them, even (again, see The Guru), as long as they're fun, and bring something new to the plate, and have characters who seem like they have triple-digit IQs.

Basically, my standards for romantic comedies are about the same as the ones for horror movies. I don't expect each one to be a ground-breaker (a Scream or a Down With Love comes along once every year, at best). But I do expect some effort.

Sweet Home Alabama, to paraphrase Sidney, is basically full of big-breasted girls who can't act and are always running up the stairs when they should be running out the front door.

And it doesn't even give us the pleasure of watching the idiots die.

Ick. I really need to get the taste of this movie out of my mouth. I adore Reese, but my assumption that I could watch her in anything is clearly misguided. Legally Blonde is an adorable romantic comedy with Reese. Sweet Home Alabama is tripe. If you want a city/country comedy, go rent Please Don't Eat the Daisies, or a Ma and Pa Kettle flick instead.
