Turns out George Plimpton died, too. Every time I come back to the computer, someone else I admired is dead. This sucks. :-(

Aw, shit! Stay away from your computer! You're a KILLER!

I like a mourning meme started at The V on Delphi. Instead of maudlin messages and oh shits, people post pictures.

I realize this would be hard to quantify, but it seems like the celebrity death rate has been unusually high this year.

And, despite his many accomplishments, my fondest memory of Plimpton is when he played Tom Hanks's father in Volunteers.

Hanks: Father, these men are coming to break my hips!

Plimpton: I think this will be a character-building experience for you. You'll become a better person. And in the meantime, you can use one of those, oh, what do they call them? A walker.

This is another sad passing on. This guy really did a lot with his life, and not just entertain. He shouldn't just be remembered as a kindly old man, but he was a kindly person his whole life. If I were a celebrity, he is the kind of celebrity I'd want to be. This is someone who saw JFK's assassination among other things, a very full existence.

Plimpton died in his sleep in his mid 70s, which can't be that horrible. Better than a heart attack in his 50's like the two celebrity deaths before him. Its still sad though.

[livejournal.com profile] ijk says she is meeting 'Shade (and I assume, you) at the Monkey this weekend. Do you have any details? :)

Herb Gardner, author of such hit Broadway comedies as "A Thousand Clowns" and the Tony-winning "I'm Not Rappaport," has died. He was 68.

So is that the third? Or is dependent upon Yendi admiring him or not?

It was RFK. Plimpton was one of the men who wrestled Sirhan Sirhan to the ground. (I wouldn't nitpick but that's a pretty big deal, I think.)

I just found that out this afternoon. Funny thing is, a fortnight or so ago I mentioned to a guy who works in my building, whom I've seen a few times, that he kept reminding me of George Plimpton....

*sigh*

He was interesting on E.R., too.

feel free
