And, despite his many accomplishments, my fondest memory of Plimpton is when he played Tom Hanks's father in Volunteers.
Hanks: Father, these men are coming to break my hips!
Plimpton: I think this will be a character-building experience for you. You'll become a better person. And in the meantime, you can use one of those, oh, what do they call them? A walker.
This is another sad passing on. This guy really did a lot with his life, and not just entertain. He shouldn't just be remembered as a kindly old man, but he was a kindly person his whole life. If I were a celebrity, he is the kind of celebrity I'd want to be. This is someone who saw JFK's assassination among other things, a very full existence.
Plimpton died in his sleep in his mid 70s, which can't be that horrible. Better than a heart attack in his 50's like the two celebrity deaths before him. Its still sad though.
ijk says she is meeting 'Shade (and I assume, you) at the Monkey this weekend. Do you have any details? :)
I just found that out this afternoon. Funny thing is, a fortnight or so ago I mentioned to a guy who works in my building, whom I've seen a few times, that he kept reminding me of George Plimpton....

Date: 2003-09-26 03:35 pm (UTC)It was RFK. Plimpton was one of the men who wrestled Sirhan Sirhan to the ground. (I wouldn't nitpick but that's a pretty big deal, I think.)
