TV thoughts
Nov. 20th, 2003 09:00 amGilmore Girls: So, did Amy Sherman-Palladino go to Yale? Just wondering. Her obsession with The Game is something that only someone who went to one of the Big Two could possible have, and I can't imagine anyone from Harvard writing that episode.
The "twist" ending, however, would have been more of a twist if A) it wasn't a plotline that EVERY SINGLE SHOW THAT"S EVER BEEN SET AT A COLLEGE HAS DONE, and B) the WB hadn't spoiled it in the plot descriptions for the episode.
Angel: . Lindsay's back! More importantly, we're seeing some interesting developments, plot-wise. Eve made it clear that, although she wasn't on Angel's side, she's not working for the Senior Partners, either (double agent? Triple?). Could she and L be the collective Little Bad, or might they turn out to be working for a force for good? Combine that with last week's episode, where we have what also might be a force for good opposed to our heroes. And is there a connection?
Toner!
Smallville: Okay, this was actually a fun episode, but the whole "is he crazy or is someone fucking with him" thing was never a mystery, which took half the fun out of it (compare this to the Buffy episode from last year, which was fucking brilliant). But keeping Lex locked up at the end will make the next few episodes (whenever they air -- I'm assuming that with next week's preemption, we might not see another new episode until January) interesting.
And, now that Lex is at Belle Reve, will he be recruited by an organization that sends criminals up against other criminals? Will we see the first Smallville appearances of Captain Boomerang and Punch and Jewlee?
I've already given my thoughts on this week's Justice League, but I've just got to say that good as Dwayne McDuffie was when he wrote comics, he's leagues better (sorry) when he's writing teleplays.

Date: 2003-11-20 06:29 am (UTC)Smallville would have been more interesting if the audience didn't know exactly what would happen from the preview. I mean, the WB goes out of their way to say the last five minutes of the show are shocking, and then they show what it's going to be! And the friends I was watching the show with burst into laughter when the Johnny Cash song came on. No pop reference or trend is safe from the WB. We mused about how ironic it was that next week, they're going to be showing _Josie and the Pussycats_ instead of "Smallville" and "Angel."

Date: 2003-11-20 08:45 am (UTC)I was surprised that Paris' kiss was mentioned in the guide description and in some promos since it happens in the last 5 seconds of the show. I'd seen the episode a week ahead of time and so all week that's been bugging me. I tried to not exactly give it away in my picks on the off chance someone hadn't already been spoiled.
College student dating a prof is a cliche so it figures it'd be done a lot on tv shows and in movies. I'm guessing it's a cliche in part 'cuz it does happen a fair bit, despite the fact that many schools have rules against that sort of thing. But I was hoping for a more interesting plotline for Paris this year. And better college storylines in general. This stuff with The Game was better than most college-related stuff they've done tho.
