It's official -- Chris Eccleston is the new Doctor. (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gmslegion for the info). Not a bad choice, imho (much better than the current horrendous rumor that Orlando "Boring and Sincere, but Pretty" Bloom will be the next James Bond).

Are they segueing from McGann to him, or just ignoring the tv movie altogether?

this won't take away the sense of humour and charm that always made Tom Baker my favorite (though admittedly my PBS stations never went a couple past the other Baker).

I know C.E. from Shallow Grave (creepy guy) and Elizabeth (more creepy and pissed off), so i've never seen him smile.

Actually, now I am sniggering, because I have images of Orlando introducing himself as 'Blond, James Blond.' I really have got to stop guzzling the painkillers.

I wouldn't worry too much about the TV movie. The BBC books rarely mention the events of the movie, although Grace was mentioned in at least one novel. Auntie Beeb doesn't worry about little things like continuity anyway (would the Daleks really hold a trial? Especially on a planet that no longer exists because the Doctor blew it up?)

Cool

Eccleston is an interesting choice. I'm wondering exactly what kind of personality his Doctor will have?

Sad! I had heard Eddie Izzard would be the next Dr, and was awaiting that anxiously. :(

Eddie Izzard rocks my face off.

You have to admit Bloom is rather pretty.. Whoever said "I'm Blond. James Blond." -- buy me a new keyboard. This one's got Pepsi all over it.

I had heard about Izzard, and was actually holding my breath for that. I also heard about it being amazingly enought, Hugh Grant, and more believably Richard E. Grant. He did the voice for the BBC animated Webcast a short while ago.
BTW, did everyone forgot Eccelston's role in 28 Days Later?

That was just a popular rumour... Started by Tom Baker, of all people! =:o}

Authoritative sources were strenuously pointing out that "it's way too soon to talk about casting; Russell T Davies is still under contract on another series with a nother company, and can't even begin discussions until Feb 2004", but the papers ignored that and put out all the casting rumours they could find.

For authoritative info, subscribe to "Doctor Who Monthly". Rusty has struck a deal with them whereby any news less headline-worthy than "we've cast the Doctor" or "the entire production team is on trial for murder" will appear in DWM first. He's started a semi-regular column in the 'zine, which will probably be a production diary.
