Supposed to be getting work done at home. But Emory's network looks to be hosed again.

So I'll talk about Deadwood. Or, as I like to call it, Cocksucker. Because "Cocksucker" gets uttered on the show a lot more than "Deadwood" does. Hell, it gets uttered a lot more than "the" and "a." Calamity Jane uses it in place of commas and exclamation points.

Anyway, spoilers about last night's episode:

Okay, face it. The one thing you know about Deadwood is that it's where Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back while playing poker. It's certainly the one thing I knew. So I knew it was going to happen on the series. I just figured it'd happen a little bit later.

Thing is, shooting Bill throws everything into chaos. Yeah, we've got lots of characters that we've been following, but only Seth, Alma, and Al have really been solidly focused on. Without Bill, there's a lot of major focus that needs to shift. I would've liked to have seen more of a story for him (his self-destructive poker playing had a ton of potential), but he might work well as a myth and as someone for the others to mourn. Plus, it'll be interesting to see how this affects the Alma/Al/EB claim situation.

The last two eps have done a lot for EB as a character. He still reminds me of Butters all grown up, but his conflicts with Al (and, for all his general cowardice, he's shown some serious balls) are fascinating. Ditto Dan Dority, who, for all his viciousness, seems to be a lot more complex than he's letting on. Fleshing out Al's henchmen (without just killing them off willy-nilly) is a major plus. Hell, the more they focus on Al, the better the show gets, period.

And I'm still curious as to where they're going with the competing brothel, as well as the threat of plague (I didn't get a "scenes from next week," so I'm not sure where they're headed with Sick Guy.

Anyway, my point is, HBO does a damned fine job of hooking me on shows.
