Other Monday stuff

yendiFirst, yes, I know that this weekend also saw the passing of Jacques Derrida, who was deconstructed on Friday. Given my general opinion of Deconstruction (no "ism"), it's not as much of a blow as Reeve.
However, one of my all-time favorite academics, Patrick Allitt, has a new book out that everyone should read. It's called I'm The Teacher, You're the Student: A Semester in the University Classroom. Said university is this one, of course. I've only read parts of it, but it's a delight. Which isn't a surprise. I took Patrick's Anglo-American History 1850-Present course in the summer of '91, while on the overseas program at Oxford (University College). It was a great class, one that demanded a lot more work than most summer courses (unlike most overseas program teachers, Patrick expected a full semester's work in the twice-a-week-for-six-weeks overseas class), but it was worth it. It was one of the five or six college classes that truly stuck with me all through my college career.
This weekend was mostly offline. I apologize in advance to many of you, as I'll never be able to respond to all the comments I owe.
We did clear a bunch of stuff of the Tivo, including a Jack and Bobby (still not caught up, though), some Surreal Lifes, and we're now caught up on Smallville. And last week's Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends? Most excessive foot fetish scene ever in a kid's show. Ever.
I also caught the second episode of the new season of Andromeda. As always, it's held down by Sorbo's insistence on playing a near-perfect hero And one who never gives up the spotlight for long), but folks like Steve Bacic and Lisa Ryder make it worthwhile.
In the "why didn't anyone tell me" category, how did a DVD set of Bottom get released without my knowing? And why don't I own it?
Oh, and my Jets are somehow 4-0. Of course, the only other time they went 4-0 to start the season, they failed to make the playoffs. And they really barely deserve the record (I mean, their wins are over the Chargers, the Bengals, the Dolphins, and the Bills, who have a combined 4-14 record), given how much they keep trying to hand the game on a platter to the other teams (missing a field goal at under 30 yards, two TOs in Bills territory, etc). But Martin and Abraham have both been wonderful so far, and this is already shaping up to be a better season than last, no matter what happens.
