yendiGilmore Girls. Quick recap: Weakest episode in ages, and one of the worst examples ever of "Gilmore TV time."
So, Jackson's greenhouse is in violation (and we sure had no idea of that, did we, since they telegraphed it from only the first second). And after not receiving any official notices or anything, he gets pissy and runs for Selectman. Fine. And the election then takes place a whopping week later? And where did all the money spent on the campaign come from? Not to mention, if Taylor's got bureaucratic stuff in place everywhere else, why not involving the election. At the least, there should have been a petition involved. And don't get me started on Lorelai pity-campaigning for Taylor.
This should have been a three-episode plotline, not a one-episode rush.
Meanwhile, much as I adore Lane and love seeing her get screen time, her developing a crush on Moronboy just doesn't work. At all. Then again, neither does the band not rehearsing or even discussing the cover song they're doing until five minutes before showtime.
And as for Rory and Dean, the less said the better. They're chemistry-free now, and Rory seems to have turned into Lindsay, at least as far as the whole subverting her identity and life for her man things go. Not to mention the utter lack of any griping at all about the situation. I understand that she may want to present a good face on things to Lorelai, but no phone call to Lane or even a gripefest with Paris?
The ep wasn't all bad. The good:
Michel's opening scene. Yes, Michel was one of three good things on this show. Sad, ain't it?
The Luke/Lorelai stuff. They're still doing a good job balancing their chemistry. Really good job.
Paris. She's gotten to the point where she's stealing every scene she's in. Her headphones/sex rant was priceless.
WB ran late, so Tivo cut off before we got the Next Week scenes. Anything exciting?
Scrubs, on the other hand, was damned near perfect. This is the episode that they need to submit for Emmy contention next year. It was that damned good. The fact that any show in which one character loses a father and another gets diagnosed with a life-changing disease could also have two of the funniest moments I've seen on TV in ages says volumes about this show.
The quotation at the top of this post, from the pre-credits, had us pausing to recover from laughing.
Likewise, the scene in which the Janitor (hey, if they're not going to name him, I'll capitalize him) swings in and grabs Ted may be the funniest physical humor moment on TV since Lucy worked an assembly line.
Heather Graham continues to show how perfect she is on this show. I love her interactions with Turk. My only mild complaint is the need for her to fully humanize -- we've seen her weakness in relationships and the hint that she might be bulimic, but neither of those has been taken anywhere.
And watching JD and his brother deal with their dad's death was just amazing. Was it funny? Sure. But it was touching as hell, as well. The denial, the frustration, the way it seeped into JD's interactions with everyone else. Just perfect. And Cox trying to deal with it, as well as Elliot's reaction (so many other sitcoms would have used this as a way to just smooth over all their previous issues) was a blast.
Over on the Turk side, the diabetes plotline was very well-done. Turk's denial, his fear of letting Carla know, the entire scene with his doctor who insists on having everyone disrobe, etc. All of it was dead-on. Faison isn't nearly appreciated enough on this show.
The tertiary plotline with the feud between the Janitor and Kelso was also a blast. J needed a new target with JD off the list this week, and playing off Kelso's very real fear of Alzheimer's was perfect. Kelso was played nicely, too -- there was that lingering sadness underneath it all that said, "yeah, I'm still sharp, but I know that it could happen to me."
Just a great episode, from beginning to end.
