Good stuff
Dec. 6th, 2004 02:51 pm1. Trashmasters. We had fun. We sucked, in terms of record (4-8), but we had fun. Without Steve, Alycia, or
jet_li_wannabe, we were relying on Gerry and me, primarily, although Solomon, who we dragged into it, nailed some nice music questions. We ended up snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in many rounds (we had early leads almost any time), but we're there for fun as much as anything else. There are some amazing players (in our first rounds, we only lost by ten points to a team with a Jeopardy TOC winner and another TOC competitor, and they finished pretty middle-of-the-pack). It's a blast of a tourney to go to.
I finished 6th individually, which was damned good (the field was a hell of a lot tougher than the UTC tourney this summer), going 46-9 (I think -- I'll have to check the Gerry's list of answers). Best gets were probably the back-to-back-to-backs on Jason Bateman from a mention of Silver Spoons and Michael Fox's "sloppy seconds," Sesame Street off of "Alison Bartlett" and "The Sopranos," and Mos Def after the opening sentence about returning to rap on three projects. Best round was the one where I started off nailing "You're so Vain," after twelve words about Dick Ebersol. I think I ended up going 9-0 in that round (it helped that there was a Hawkgirl tossup in that packet). That said, I'm still most proud of getting a tossup about Mookie Blaylock, as non-NY athletes are not my forte.
All prizes were crappy bargain-bin CDs. I ended up with a John McVeigh solo CD, which I haven't listened to yet, but I'm sure is every bit as good as a John McVeigh solo project should be.
I also scored the "wrongest answer" prize, for buzzing early with "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" on a question that meandered its way to "Henry V." I felt perfectly justified given what info I had when I buzzed (BBC, '70s, miniseries, bad fx), moreso when I heard that the same neg happened in two other rooms (besides, who the hell asks a "Henry V" question at Trashmasters?). But my prize for that one was a CD of cover songs of boy band music. Oh, the cheese.
Overall, just a fun time. The folks at trash tourneys are all fun people, and I love the superlong trivia questions.
2. The Jets. I came home to find that my boys kicked ass and took names. Although our D did falter -- we let them score a whopping 7 points. :-) Of course, we're likely to get our asses handed to us next week, but I'm still happy with Chad's return. Now here's hoping that Abraham's injury isn't too serious.
3. This weekend's JLU Oh, holy shit! The entire created-for-tv supporting cast of Superfriends! And Max Lord! And the Wall! And oh, that exchange between Bats and Waller, which felt like a flashback to the days when Ostrander was writing the Squad. Just a near-perfect episode, and one that sets up all sorts of interesting questions. The animated DCU is just amazing right now.
4. This weekend's Arrested Development. The best episode this year, and one of the funniest things I've seen in ages. I'm glad to see Henry Winkler back on as the family lawyer, and the plotline with Ice was just perfect.
5. The lunch meeting today was catered by The Epicurean. Yum!
