Fry and Stockdale

So, Christopher Fry died this weekend, it seems. And I'm ashamed to say that I'd just assumed he was already dead. Like everyone on the planet, I've read exactly one work of his, but damn, was it good.

And now it turns out that former Veep candidate Stockdale has died, as well. Somewhere out there, there's a political cartoonist drawing Stockdale at the Pearly Gates, asking, "why am I here."

Dennis Miller goes on a great rant about people who were critical of Stockdale not because they disagreed with him, but because they only saw a doddering old fool, and not a POW who had been severely injured in the line of duty.

Not untrue, but the public scorn, even if misguided, wasn't inappropriate. Stockdale was an incredibly brave man, but a god-awful veep choice, and his selection was the final proof that Perot was completely unqualified to run for the presidency.
