[livejournal.com profile] dtaylor's review of the new ultra-deluxe edition of Showgirls actually has me rethinking the movie.

Like her, I hated it when I first saw it (on rental) back in the mid-90s, and I never got around to watching it again. I can't justify the cost of this set, but I might have to keep an eye out for it the next time it's on HBO.

And I agree there are many good reasons to like films like those. I, myself, am a big fan of such movies as Iced, The Big Meat Eater, Schlock, and Splatter University. But I draw the line somewhere before Showgirls.

Also, I was kidding.

Oh you're kidding. Showgirls is the BEST! That soft light exit of her old friend the club owner, the way he stops and looks at her with a tear in his eye like there's so much he wants to say and then he says with a catch in his throat "it must be strange not having men come on you."

How can you NOT LOVE THAT MOVIE????

camp isn't just a row of tents

No spoons though.

*shakes head* having gone to school with Elizabeth Berkley, I just...nope...can't even begin to think of watching that movie again, nor purchasing it.

I'm sure I'm disgusted by her on all number of levels, but the lowest was when I would get in trouble because I was "cutting class" when it turns out that my idiot homeroom teacher couldn't tell the difference between her and me, and marked *me* absent, when it was she who regularly cut class.

Hah - trust me, we may both share the same first name, and our last names sound similar at first (My Burke to her Berkley)...and we may have both been blonde, but that's about it. She was tall and one of the "beautiful people" - I was a band geek. And see, that was the problem. Idiot homeroom teacher catered to the popular kids. He's also the one that ended up stealing my political cartoons (because he actually cared about political cartoons, and I was hoping to get some actual feedback on mine despite not being a popular kid).

Anyway - back then, I wished I'd looked like her. Now? Not so much - sure I'd like to be thin again, but eh.

In my opinion? Watching her simper around to various kids and teachers? I don't care what that reviewer said about her acting. She wasn't acting. That was her own normal attitude. That which she did on Saved By the Bell was more like acting than anything else I saw her do.

But that orgasm/epileptic fit in the pool was PRICELESS.

And the way she delivered teh line "Bitch!" and stomped away - Prince in Purple Rain couldn't have done it better.

From Michigan too, I see? My friend who went to HS with her refused to see Showgirls for a long time because he was all "But, but its HER!"

Dude I would totally see it then. I have a high school classmate that is in Skeleton Key (Jen Apgar) and if she was naked I would pay money for that movie (lucky for me it's PG-13)

I can't remember if she started Calabasas High School (Southern California) in her 10th or 11th grade...we had homeroom when I was in 10th and she was in 11th.

And yeah - I had the same reaction - I only managed to see it because it was on HBO, and there was literally nothing else on, so I did the train wreck thing.

Yeah, he knew her whn she was younger and not-so-famous, so I suppose that makes a bigger difference, too. :P

(Must have been middle school he knew her, and not HS, then. I dunno. I just know he went to school with hr in Farmington Hills.)

*gasp* Saved by the Bell was not mediocre! Doesn't the reviewer remember the episode where Jesse Spano got hooked on pep pills? That was some quality acting.

Sorry, i can't see anything about Elizabeth Berkley without bringing up the most infamous episode of Saved by the Bell ever.

No. No, no, no, no, NO. That movie was flat out hideous. Even the wonderful images of Gina Gershon gettin' nekkid n' busy didn't save that film. Ugh!

And I could DEFINITELY watch a 2 hour film on Gina Gershon being naked. Damn straight!!

I can't believe it. A movie even that many boobs can't save.

I think everyone's taking it too seriously. The nudity loses all power 15 minutes in. After that it's the funniest fucking movie ever produced. Damn Verhoeven cracks me up every time (I suspect his commentary track likens someone to Nazis, because how can you have a Verhoeven commentary track WITHOUT Nazis?)

Oh that movie makes me smile just thinking about it.

But Gina Gershon's exchange with Berkely (WHORE! Bitch!) was pure camp. They were like drag queens trapped in the bodies of women.

And this did get Gershon the role in Bound

Heh. I saw it somewhat recently for the first time, and i think that reviewer had been into the good drugs when coming up with those "insights". That may have been what they were trying for- it's possible- but it's a dreadful failure. On all counts. IMHO, of course...

I have no need to read the review, but I am SHOCKED at the Amazon.com price.

I can get the Showgirls set for like $21... at a REGULAR store...

but Shot glasses and playing cards aren't worth $21.
