They don't have every book -- they're missing the first book, Cop Hater, but they have the second, The Mugger, and the follow-up, The Con Man. Most of them stand alone, although there are running plot lines (compare it to, say, The Closer or CSI, in that you can watch any one episode for the mystery plot, even if you'll miss some character notes).
