Seriously, I rank telephones about ninety-eighth on my list of ideal ways to communicate, and it's only ahead of "circle-jerk morse code" because phones have a better refractory period.

If it's important, email me. If it's not important, don't.

Of course, I don't understand how I became phonephobic. Up until my 20s, I would happily gab away for hours with my friends, boyfriends, etc. Either my social anxiety worsened with age or answering a phone became associated with Work.

Up until, oh, last week, the phone and Ye Olde Intarwebe were my only modes of communication with sane people. The phone is nicer because if I close my eyes, it's almost like there are people actually with me instead of far away. However, with recent wordfuckery, the phone is less and less viable as a communication tool. Yuck.

I hate hate hate hate hate the phone. With a passion. I don't answer it 99% of the time unless it's my sister or my fiance, and sometimes when it's my sister I *still* don't, because nine times out of ten all she has to really tell me can be left on a message, but if I answer it, I'm subjected to a half hour of small talk.

I've become a big fan of text messaging, makeing someone type it in forces a clarity and conciseness that rambling voice calls never get close to

I've also found using grouped ringtones (e.g. one for work, one for friends, one for dr's and such) make my cellphone a better toy

I don't like speaking on the phone either. However, I believe that IM and to a lesser extent email are actually worse for specific conversations such as big R (relationship) discussions.

I have had two people (two too many IMO) break up with me via email/chat. In the best of situations a break-up won't happen but if it does, why not do it face to face or at least over the phone? Most people do not know how to write well enough to convey so much that is unsaid but still there, still observed.

I just think it's a measure of respect for me personally. If I spent most of my time with someone, how can they get to the point where kicking me to the curb in a chat window is acceptable?
