Kid

I introduced Miss Kid to the wonders of Boggle last night! She loved it, thankfully. I kicked her butt a lot in the first two games, but for the third, we made three-letter words verboten for me, and she was starting to get the hang of looking for letter combos and along zigzags, so I only won by about eight points. She's already requested more tonight, which is of the good. :-)

Today is picture day, which means that shadesong and I are currently praying for the nice outfit Elayna has on to stay clean until after the photo. :-)

Condolences

muse0fire's wonderful cat, Phaedra, passed away this weekend. Phaedra was the first cat I ever met that I liked (like our own Max and Jack, she loved cuddling with and hopping on humans), and a major touchstone on my road to becoming a cat person*. She'll be missed.

Speaking of blowing, I caught the season premiere of The Simpsons last night. Unlike many other folks, I've been defending the show for years, as I've quite liked the surreal trips they've gone on, the self-referential stuff, and the exploration of some of the minor characters. But this episode was by-the-numbers and bad as anything. There's simply no point in turning in another "Homer pisses off Marge" episode (especially, what, six eps after the last one -- the one where he bought the mobile home?), especially if there's no sense of either drama or fun to it. Some of the moments with the manatees were fun, but otherwise, the ball was dropped right from the opening scene, which practically begged for an appearance by Comic Book Guy to remind them that Homer's had his football betting issues before (involving Lisa, even).

That said, the season premieres of Family Guy and American Dad were both better. FG was good, if not their best (too many of the flashbacks fell flat), but AD was at its best. Gotta love Patrick Stewart's character. Best joke of the night on any show: Reagan Smash!

Also caught up on Cowboy Bebop -- I've now watched the entire series, with only the movie to go. That's an amazingly fine anime.

Rome, Harvey Birdman, and Slings and Arrows await us on Tivo tonight.



*By which I mean "person who enjoys being around cats," not "like one of Malcolm McDowell or Nastassja Kinski."

I've discovered that Bebop is like a anime gateway drug; it's so different, in many respects, from what people expect from anime that they seem to be blown away.
And I dare anyone to call the ending of the series anything less than stunning.

Bebop is definately one of my favorites. I would recommend 2 other animes, Fullmetal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex.

I'm a huge fan of GitC: SAC. Have avoided FMA so far, but I figure I'll pick it up sometime soon, now that I've worked through Bebop.

When I first saw FMA I thought it would be a bit childish but now that I have watched it I can say it is definately not childish. Definately raises a lot of moral questions.

I would also not recommend it for little ones as there is some heavy violence.

I actually like the FMA manga better... maybe because it's still going. ^_^ But really, the art is breathtaking. Brilliant anatomy and perspective.

The Bebop Remix is out now, as in 'a preorder arrived today in an undisclosed but very happy location'. Apparently it's already sooooo much better than any previous sets... :) sit_good_dog will likely be squeeing later.

LOL! I'm just falling behind on the series I'm trying to collect.

BTW, 2nd rec on Champloo. The aforementioned sit_good_dog isn't as fond of it as Bebop, but it has Steve Blum's voice, lots of interesting bits and great visual style.

Another BTW -- the FMA manga is just starting to get licensed American translation, yay!

I'm not a humongous anime fan, but listeningowl is. She's a Bebop fan (though her favorite is Inu-Yasha). Of the ones she's Netflixed that I've paid a modicum of attention to, Excel Saga was endearingly strange, and we proudly own the Colorful DVD.

What bugged me the most was that Marge left the kids with Homer, while the film crew was still there. That seemed completely out of character for her, and stinks of sloppy writing, IMHO.

Heh. Yeah, given the amazing run we've had over the Edwards years, I figured we had a season like this coming. I'm sure the Fins fans will really have a field day when they play us.
