Don't forget, folks, tonight is the first night of the NHL pre-Playoffs!

(And don't get me started on the new fucking rule about goalies being limited to a smaller space).

ETA: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] piperdawn Learn Hockey at Home. :-)

I like the removal of the 2 line pass rule. I also like the touch-up offsides being allowed again.

Yeah, the "benefit" of that one really escapes me. I suppose I'll have to see it in action to judge any effect, but it mostly seems pointless as far as the stated goals of opening up play.

*boggle*

That's stupid. Do they *want* more people to get boarded as they try to prevent an icing?

On the flip side of this, there's less icing - refs can now wave off icing calls on attempted passes.

I don't like the goalie rule, either, in general, but icing isn't going to complicate it that much.

Well the goalie rule is partially to keep them from being another defender with special priviledges. I am OK with the rule. If we wanted to get rid of the rule, then goalies outside of a certain zone should be fair game for a check. Before, goalies couldn't be touched. Patrick Roy was notorious for becoming a third defenseman and nobody could touch him...otherwise they'd draw a penalty.

And I am completely fine with that. So many times I wanted someone to just floor Roy when he was playing the puck out by the blueline.

1.) It's football season people! Watch!

2.) It's MLB playoffs people! Watch!

3.) The goalies are being penalized to improve scoring, because apparently the NHL believes that its fans want more 7-5 games. Knowing many a hockey fan, I can say that while you might want scoring you don't want to handcuff goalies to do it. Using Olympic and International rules might be a better place to start from what I hear.

4.) If your NHL team doesn't have a cable deal I hope you get OLN!

5.) I wish you luck with the season.

6.) I'm a NY Jet fan...I understand pain. *cries*

The main problem with the Olympic rules is that many arenas would have problems accomodating to the larger rink size.

My understanding is that it would reduce revenue as they would have room for fewer seats, but as a non-hockey fan, I find the international hockey more watchable!

Before the last season capsized there was a lot of talk about changing rules to draw more people in to watch hockey and I thought most of that line of reasoning was just... well, lame. I don't think higher scoring games are going to make folks that aren't interested in hockey change their minds. Personally, I like a low scoring game. That tells me the goalies are (most likely) doing their jobs well. Although it does sometimes tell me nobody was really playing any hockey and someone just got lucky.

Exactly! A really good goalie is a thing of amazing beauty. I think that's what made the last Stanley Cup so exciting. The goalies were honestly two of the best and it made every shot on goal a real challenge.

1) Don't care much now that Hockey us back.

2) Never cared except when I was a kid living in Cooperstown, NY, then I just got sick of it.

3) And the rule changes are not for the true hockey fans. The changes are for the casual fan. Olympic rules have instant icing. I hate that. They also play a different style...it is a more cross ice style because they have more room to work. There is less checking and absolutely no fighting. I like the scuffles. They can change the momentum of a game and fire up a struggling team.

4) Yep...got OLN and I hope this "test" works out for OLN's owners, Comcast. If this hockey thing works out, then Comcast may be able to start up a sports channel to rival ESPN. Then maybe we could see more actual sports rather than poker championships and 9-ball pool matches.

5) Thanks!

6) Sorry to hear about the Jets woes. Now can somebody kick Curtis Martin in the shin and get him running again? I don't think he has crossed the goalline yet.

Scoring was way up tonight - most of the games were like 5-3, 5-4, 6-3, scores like that.
