Thoughts on the next Lemony Snicket book
Oct. 10th, 2005 06:55 pmI'm not sure how much of a spoiler it is to talk about titles, but considering the fact that the title and cover art to A Series of Unfortunate Events Book 12 is being kept secret (even though it comes out in eight days), I'll tag this.
First, remember that there's no guarantee that any of the information at this site isn't a lie. This is the Snicketverse we're dealing with here. But I'm assuming it's accurate, for now.
So, I've been avidly running through the clues at The Nameless Novel, and today's led to a secret code on this page. The code itself mentions a "Counterfeit Concierge," and in the cover art that we can see on the TNN page, there's clearly a concierge's desk.
Now, as some folks have noted, Snicket has not repeated alliterative/assonantal starting letters. That might be deliberate, or coincidental. If it's the latter, both "hotel" and "resort" are possibilities, probably with "horrible/horrid" and "wretched," respectively.
In addition, if you read the faux promo for the next The Littlest Elf book, the title is The Remarkable Resort. Since TLE tends to be the mirror of ASOUE, a "resort" title is certainly a possibility.
Of course, aside from the repeated first letters, I'm also not a fan of "wretched." That said, there's no direct synonym beginning with a true "r." That said, given our lack of other information, there are still thousands of adjectives -- after all, "ersatz" and "reptile" were certainly not inherently negative words.
I don't like the other possibilities for hotel -- inn, motel, lodge, etc are all too low-scale to have a concierge. That said, a big enough resort could be an island, which would give us an unused letter. And given the state of things at the end of the last book, I could see them getting to an island resort.
Anyway, only a week to go. But I want to know now, dammit!
